What do you think is a fair beer price in a bar?

So, the poll allows multiple choices and its anonymous.

 

I have just included typical beer prices that I have experienced recently in downtown Bangkok and other tourist areas in Thailand. 

 

I know it can be cheaper up in Isaan and maybe elsewhere and I also didn't include shop prices obviously.

 

I also get that it's highly subjective. In most UK cities beer is cheap, in my opinion. Even good beers that are imported and let's not forget that income is much higher in general....and the owner has to pay decent salaries to their staff and higher taxes as well (and then there's rent, not to mention utility bills are expensive in many Western countries). In Thailand, I think it's just the rent that's high; the staff salaries are very low and I think taxes are low here too (also utility bills are cheap here right?)

 

I tend to think beer is expensive here, especially for local grog. I could be sitting drinking fine Belgian beer in a British town in a pub with the heating on in the dead of winter being served by a barman getting paid fair income (and I assume the owner still turns a profit).......for the same price as sitting drinking Thai beer in an open air bar in Thailand being served by unprofessional barkeep. I mean, in some bars here the draft is like flat rotten eggs; you have no choice but to drink bottles.

 

I was in a little bar down Sukhumvit the other night and I must have seen at least 100k pass through the till in just a few hours. I get that rent is probably high, but staff is cheap, utilities are a little, and taxes aren't that much here. I mean the mark up on a small bottle has to be like x4 the price they buy it at in many places (especially after 8pm...don't get me started on that policy).

 

Anyway, what's a fair price for a beer? lol

Too many variables, indoor bar with air con vs outdoor bar, lively staff of many vs 1 or 2 workers locked to their phone, clean modern furniture/TV vs just some old bar stools, prime tourist location vs small soi.

The price I would pay is not included in the list but I'll give your a clue, it would be under THB50.

I honestly believe, most just push it as far as they can because it's totally unregulated.

 

I mean if they tried to serve a pint for 36 pounds in London, I think something would be done about that.

 

But the tourist market in Thailand is just a free-for-all.

Imagine being a Somchai and earning 300 a day (probably 10-12 hours) and then paying 50 for a beer? Bloody expensive.

 

That's like a minimum wager in the UK earning about 70 GBP for a day's work (8 hours) and then paying almost 12 pounds a beer. It just wouldn't happen.

65-70bht is enough for a large beer (40% markup)

Rent on a shopfront is 4,000bht/month.

So they'd need to make 150bht/day for the premises.

 

What rent do you think 7-11 pay?

And they sell beer a lot cheaper than a bar.

Sometimes I pay 150B for a bottle of water. It depends on where and the company. 

 

Think about back home. A beer in a local pub might be cheap. But go to a bar with some pretty girls and even the high Thai prices are suddenly very good.

They must be running a 100k (or two) through their till a day, easily, when tourism is in full swing especially. Even if the rent is 200k a month for a big place on Sukhumvit, it is easily paid for in a few days. 

 

I walked down Soi 4 last night. I had to go halfway down the soi to find a bar that still had seats with a street view available. Everyone was sitting shoulder-to-shoulder (paying 100 plus a bottle). The soi was crammed.

LOL. I think I'm well acquainted with the cost of them in LOS, and for sure had I stuck to renting I'd have been well ahead on the game.

BTW, I never bought more than one lady drink in a bar, and more usually none at all. I found that if I bought one lady drink, it kept all the others away, and usually the lady went dancing 30 seconds after her drink arrived, so I left it on the table and if any other "want one drink" tried to sit down I just pointed to the full drink- worked every time.

Covid got me out of the habit of going to the bar everyday, So now I dont mind staying home go to Makro and buy a case of whatever I fancy, half the price

No such thing as a 'fair' price for something that is optional. Bars set their prices on their rent, insurance, utilities, staffing costs. Places in great locations with splendid views rightly charge more. Anybody who worries about beer prices should stay at home..

In street bar with no air con you pay less than a Go Go bar surrounded by beautiful naked girls. There is no 'fair' price because the price is not determined by the drink only but numerous other variables. Only broke backpackers, poverty stricken Saddlers and cheap Charlie's think about 'fair' prices for non essentials...

I think it's just local mentality with those involved in tourist areas. Like the taxi drivers who won't turn their meters on and try to negotiate double or triple the price. Scammers at heart.

When i first travelled to Thailand i was surprised to see the prices of local beer like Leo, Singha, Chang and Archa.

(I rate them in this order from best to worst. Chang, Singha, Archa and Leo)

 

They were expensive compared to local Tuborg and Carlsberg here in Denmark where you still  in 2021 can buy 30 Tuborg or Carlsberg for 92.5 danish kroner, which is the same as 16 baht pr 33 cl bottle.

 

So when i saw local thai beers were 3 x that price in supermarkets i was surprised and not in a good way ????

 

As for prices in a standard thai bar i would say 60-70 baht for a standard chang and 90-100 for a large Chang is ok.

 

Beers worldwide are often cheaper than in Thailand.

Going to tenerife next week, where a pint is 1 euro at the seafront bars.

(approx 38 bath) 

 

How come the retail price of local thai beers are so much higher in Thailand ,

compared to the prices for local beers in other countries?
