Thailand Wants Home-Grown Cannabis Listed as UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine’s Deputy Director-General, Dr. Kwanchai Wisitthanon, said the department has gathered around 30 strains of local cannabis. Each strain’s DNA was thoroughly studied and recorded to identify where different strains are grown. The department aims to use the database to register them for geographical indications or GI.

 

The department will ask the Ministry of Culture to list local cannabis strains as national heritage, a process that should be completed by March 2022.

 

Furthermore, the department will ask the ministry to submit the list of local Thai cannabis strains to UNESCO to have them listed as intangible cultural heritage items.

 

Dr. Kwanchai added that Thailand has been using cannabis to treat patients for more than 300 years as it has a wide range of medicinal properties such as increasing appetite, promoting good sleep habits, painkilling, balancing anxiety, curing epilepsy, and more.

I have been trying to partake of Thailand's national heritage for years ... why are they making it so difficult?

Interesting push.. I guess if you don't ask you don't get. But the couple of local growers in my circle of friends prefer to grow imported strains like Gelato and Wedding Cake.

Nakhon Phanom is generally recognized as the focal point for thai cannabis growth and distribution. Perhaps as much due to its remoteness from Bangkok, as its proximity to Laos?

No, it hasn't, Dr. Kwanchai. Or have you forgotten that cannabis was ILLEGAL in this country for at least 80 years? Your nation's prisons are full of people who tried to... uhm... partake in your "national heritage". So please, Dr. Kwanchai, don't try rewriting history just because it all of a sudden suits your agenda.

Well the thai minincult (ministry of culture) is also trying to get thai massage recognized by UNESCO, so if you want to indulge in a bit of heritaging,  go for soap, oil or hand.

Some extracts, budder, shatter, rosin, dabs, etc can have a less pronounced odor.

 

And edibles: odorless but oh so hard to get lit.

Now I see in the case...one can buy half dozen big, nasty leaves for b60. No idea what you're supposed to do with that rubbish.

 

The team was like ten people. Wow, what a blazingly stupid idea.
