BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health is working with related agencies to reduce the number of accidents caused by drunk driving during the New Year holidays.

Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, together with Deputy Public Health Minister Satit Pitutacha, Permanent Secretary of Public Health Dr Kiatipoom Wongrachit, announced the new “Drink Don’t Drive” campaign for the upcoming holidays.

The New Year holiday period is when most road accidents occur as many people return home or travel abroad to celebrate with their families. Many road accidents are caused by drunk driving, with approximately 33.06 percent of accidents occurring last year as a result of driving under the influence.

The public health minister urged motorists to observe “Drink Don’t Drive” guidelines by refraining from consuming alcohol before or while driving and to prioritize safety by driving within the speed limit and wearing helmets. He also reminded people to maintain COVID-19 prevention measures by maintaining social distancing and wearing masks in public places.

Public health volunteers will meanwhile work with other officials to establish checkpoints and monitor for drunk drivers. They will also prohibit illegal alcohol sales, especially to minors under the age of 20, while volunteers will monitor their designated zones to guarantee public safety.

Illegal alcohol sale or activities can be reported by dialing 0-2590-3342 or the hotline number 1422.

350 days a year it is no problem, but only with Songkran and New Year the campaign.. Never see anything on TV to make people aware... Nor many tests at a checkpoint. In my country the police check everybody on alcohol at a checkpoint, even if you had 1 glass, but here they look for payment of tax and go can go...Or today I noticed that drivers avoided the checkpoint by driving on the frontage road and get back behind the police on the mainroad.. No police on the frontage road to stop or check them or me

It won’t be easy when most Thais and Farang seem to be obsessed with alcohol here.

Yes let's praise Anutin for stopping a million tourists from coming with their bad drinking and  driving habits, maybe he could improve deaths by banning them every holiday period, Praise Anutin ! Praise covid !

I always felt the road carnage at New Years and Songkran was all about Thais driving to and from the provinces, and hence not really anything to do with foreign tourists.

Thailand hiding behind drunk driving again.

They don't care what they do drunk or sober on the roads here.

They kill there children, wives, whole families and friends.

Sober or drunk.

Way to go Thailand. -4.0 yet again.

why not tell the truth about your people on the roads. Then do something about the problem.
