I’m playing devils advocate because I find this specific case more interesting than many issues which have popped up on this forum in the past. 

 

I find it particularly interesting how some want to condemn this guy based on media reports. 

I also find it particularly interesting how the media reports vary so much. 

 

 

Thus, while I believe its possible that Baruch tried to pull a fast one, yet at the same time I still believe it possible that he was the victim of someone else’s careless lack of detail in informing him he was free to go, from the perspective of continuing discussion I’d like to address the points you made....

I have not found those reports of any police reviewing CCTV footage from Bangkok hotels. 

I have read reports that the Police saw the CCTV footage of Baruch attempting to check into a hotel in Pattaya.

This is Thailand, if there were footage of Baruch walking out of the hotel we’d have seen it already.

Articles which copy each other is not the same as  ‘many detailed reports’ which would imply from independent or different observers or investigations etc... 

 

The news articles I have read also state that he hailed a taxi from a hotel in Sukhumvit.

This is where detail would be important - was this hotel in Sukhumvit his ’Test & Go’ hotel ?

 

If not it would highlight something nefarious, however, if so it would highlight a degree of innocence in that he was leaving with full knowledge of the hotel staff and not escaping anywhere

This makes me really curious. I have checked into 3 different hotels in the past 10 days. None of them asked for Covid test documents (i.e. PCR Test certificate).

Why would this hotel ask for a PCR Test certificate ???? - this alone seems strange... unless...

There was a policy whereby the hotel staff checked arrival date and anyone arriving in Thailand within the past xx hrs needs to present a test certificate...  

 

News articles I read stated that he [Baruch] refused to present his passport. On face value this is odd and plays into the hands of ‘guilty’... however, has this been reported correctly? or did the hotel want to ‘keep’ or ‘hold on to’ his passport over night which he refused so went elsewhere ?

Personal recent experience highlights differently. Hotels have not been interested in my arrival (in Thailand) date. I’ve checked in with my Thai Pink ID.

I’ve read articles which state different things. 

 

1) He called the Embassy who told him to sit tight and they would inform the police to go pick him up.

2) He handed himself in to the police by calling them and telling them where he was.

3) Police located the Van he’d rented and found him nearby (seems very feasible).

 

If this is as you say.... it seems quite damning, but also quite a ‘feat’ of the Thai Police who in which case are significantly more effective than we may assume.

Key Points

Police said the man arrived in Thailand on December 17 and was placed in quarantine at a hotel in the Sukhumvit area. He took an RT-PCR test which came back positive for COVID-19 but the strain has yet to be determined.

The patient then refused treatment before escaping the quarantine facility.

Police said the man then hailed a taxi and travelled to Pattaya where he tried to check in to a hotel but was refused entry as he was unable to provide any travel documentation

 

He stayed in Pattaya until December 19 where he rented a mini van and travelled to Chumphon. 

Police then picked him up on CCTV in Chumpon and discovered he was travelling to Koh Samui.

On Wednesday, police tracked the man down to a restaurant at Naithon Beach.

A 2,000 baht fine for violating the CDA/emergency decree - the same "crime" and "punishment" as not wearing a mask.

 

Assume he was escorted to the airport for a flight home.  

 

Typically the authorities here would have a presser where the "criminal" apologizes, prostrates himself, then is forgiven.

Can't even find out if he 'escaped' carrying a suitcase or wearing a back-pack! Perhaps the bell boy carried his stuff to the taxi to Pattaya or Samui?
