Imprison ? I am married to a Thai for about 21 years we both live in OZ we still have family in LOS that is the reason we travel to LOS otherwise we would travel elsewhere.

You think about it if I move to LOS again I will loose most of my pension I will have the hassle of renewing visas, 90 day reports and so on I don't need that here neither my wife who got Australian citizenship. Another thing is I don't like Thai food so it would cost me a fortune on western food . I don't have to deposit money for visas, going anywhere in LOS I get double priced, But as you said it is up to you.

Your argument falls down in many examples.  I could understand if you had a medical condition that requires constant treatment, but if not, you could easily chose to live out your twilight years in a place where you holiday to.  The step is not that big, and a holiday budget is not the same as living in Thailand full time.

To be honest, if that's all you've got to "survive" on per month, you're better off in Australia at your age.

Just curious to compare Australia with the UK. My mother is in the equivalent situation as you. Government pays her rent, local taxes and she ends up with 1900 AUD a month.

Utilities cost her 400 AUD

She is left with 1500AUD a month for food, her car and discretionary spending.

With Lidl, Primark etc very easy to live on that.

How does her 1500 compare to you? And in the UK people talk nonsense about heat or eat. She has plenty. Is there the same whining there?

I don't smoke, but it's been all over the news back in Australia about the boom in illegally imported tobacco.  It's boomed because it's now around $50 a packet, where a grey import is around $25. 

 

Perhaps the day will come where we will start to see people selling home brewed beer, particularly as alcohol in Australia is taxed twice a year.  

 

Even the Chief Health Office recognizes the link between taxes making a product unaffordable, and he growth in illegally imported products. 

 

Maybe alcohol will go the same way as tobacco as it become less affordable over time. 

 

Perhaps Australians will have to start buying illegally distilled Lao Khao in the future.

As I posted before he is defrauding the federal government and Centrelink and leeching off our taxes. It won't be difficult for Centrelink to figure out who is he - stupidity posting on public forums he is 77 old and married to a Thai 21 years, flying to Thailand twice per year, won't be difficult to triage. Many govt departments are starting to do data mining of publicly available info, that includes forums and Facebook.

The problem is the government started importing lots of people from the subcontinent but the pie is not getting bigger. This year the Sumandou iron ore is expected to hit the market and drive the prices down. There is also upcoming LNG oversupply. I would expect higher budget deficit and lower Aussie dollar. If the dollar goes sub 20 baht there will be some pain felt in Thailand.
