webfact
File photo Thailand on Wednesday (February 9) reported 13,182 new COVID-19 cases, 8,751 recoveries and 24 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. ▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 13,043 Prisons: 139 ▶︎ Recoveries: 8,571 Wednesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,531,051 with 22,344 deaths. The news comes as Thailand’s Office of the Insurance Commission (OIC) has issued new rules, which take effect on February 15th, limiting compensation claims by people infected with COVID-19. Patients who are symptomatic or who have mild symptoms being treated in hospital or in home isolation and are without doctor’s certificate stating the need for treatment in such facilities will not be covered by the medical care or compensation scheme. Assistant OIC Secretary-General Apakorn Panlerd said that the new rule is in line with the Public Health Ministry’s guidelines for the care of people infected with COVID-19, as revised on January 4th, which has resulted in a change to the conditions covering claims. Popular Post JonnyF
Quite a jump in numbers. This explains a couple of very "Thai" solutions that have been proposed in the last few days. 1. Stopping insurance payouts for asymptomatic cases. 2. Proposing that daily cases are not reported.
Popular Post Caldera
Still seems to be far off reality, even after this jump. At the moment (and maybe since 2-3 weeks or so), I can't talk to anyone here in Bangkok who doesn't mention staff, family or friends being on sick leave due to Covid. That has never been the case during previous waves, where such reports and firsthand exposures remained isolated, so Omicron is well and truly here and the official numbers don't nearly reflect that. No surprises there of course. Edited February 9, 2022 by Caldera

mtls2005
All of a sudden that 30,000 number the authorities mentioned ~ 8 weeks ago doesn't seem so far-fetched.
Pouatchee
And the Gvt is going to change their divulgation of daily statistics... me wonders why ???? Might it have to do with an expected increase of cases due to variants? ...or maybe because they need a foreign influx of cash... but then again ... dudn't the powers that be say that tourist money was but a drop in the bucket of this great economy? Popular Post Dogmatix
Even though the absolute reported numbers are so low as to be farcical, it is possible that the rate of change reflects some underlying reality. For the sake of argument, let's say the reported combined PCR and ATK positives are somewhat conservatively under reported by a consistent factor of 5x. That would mean that actual cases went up from 50k a day to 100k a day in the last month. The problem with this assumption is that it makes it obvious that the rate of change is also understated. Thailand would be the only country where it took omicron a whole month to double its daily cases. That seems to suggest there is nothing of value in the government stats. Meanwhile Thai media reports very little on the pandemic raging through the nation now. All emphasis is on the government's efforts to reduce COVID restrictions and bring back mass tourism as quickly as possible, as well as its fantasy schemes to attract the world's wealthiest people who can't wait to be second class citizens and put themselves at risk in a corrupt, dangerous country with no rule of law.

Rhacsyn
I read with interest the few cynical posts today but in reality is it not time anyway, as things stand with Omicron today, to change from reporting daily case case numbers to focusing on hospital utilisation, and serious cases? I have read this suggestion many times on this forum recently. As an example of how things have changed, Singapore reports that 99.7% of current positive cases either have no or mild symptoms. UK, Denmark, UAE amongst others have opened up. In addition, Sweden has taken the decision to stop testing and that it is time to stop wasting money and resources on testing, even on people with symptoms. Time, they suggest, to simply move on, and focus on looking after the vulnerable and sick as would have been the case for illnesses in pre covid times...........it was not possible to stop or stem the flow of the Omicron variant, but thankfully it does appear to have been a little kinder to us than some of its predecessors. https://www.khaleejtimes.com/coronavirus/covid-19-sweden-ends-testing-as-pandemic-restrictions-lifted

So the logical next step would be to look at the need for daily reporting of testing to a more realistic weekly or bi weekly. Thailand is nowhere near that stage although I'm sure Prayut and Anutin will love the withdrawal of the published daily numbers, especially while they still have the emergency decree in place along with strict restrictions and of course the double tap test and go. I'm pretty sure tourists also want to know the risk of being forcibly incarcerated on their 5th day test when arriving.
