Thailand on Thursday (February 10) reported 14,822 new COVID-19 cases, 8,503 recoveries and 20 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 14,576 Prisons: 246

▶︎ Recoveries: 8,503

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,545,873 with 22,364 deaths.

The news comes as Thailand’s daily Covid-19 infections could possibly reach 30,000 cases by the end of February and could affect activities during the upcoming Songkran festival, Thailand’s biggest holiday scheduled in April, a representative from the Ministry of Public Health stated yesterday, February 9th.

Dr. Chakrarat Pittayawonganon, Director of the Bureau of Epidemiology under the Public Health Ministry, gave an interview this afternoon that the Covid-19 situation assessment around the world proved that foreign countries in Europe and America are in a downtrend of the outbreak with less infections while many countries in Asia, including Thailand, is in an uptrend with higher numbers of cases.

Yes and, without a shift of paradigm, they will need Covid jails for 15 to 20 million people.

Does it matter? Maybe not in Thailand, where no one understands these stupid decorative zeros at the right of some numbers.

True , but the numbers were nowhere correct . With Omicron , in Europe daily numbers were untestable high with over 40% positivity rate . You can see a trend in the numbers . Even if the numbers are 10-20 times higher , the trend of positives should also rise fast , together with positivity rate . Many countries in Europe are now over the top and are seeing fast dropping numbers , basically because last 6-8 weeks so many have been infected that the virus can't find a new victim anymore .

Thailand is unlikely to lockdown again or close its borders despite increased infections

Despite increasing covid infection numbers due to the Omicron variant, Thailand is unlikely reimplement a nationwide lockdown or close its borders to international travelers, a senior doctor told Thai Enquirer on Thursday.

... or by what you are saying... going to school and not reporting it. Rock on to all those who want to get rid of the safety measures... As far as I am concerned the only way to overcome this is to keep the safety measures in effect. People who don't even have a stake here keep crying to open up the floodgates... Selfish mongers who only think of the party side of life in Thailand.

Proof of mongers is in the pudding... because if the numb skull tourists who want to come on vacation here are covid + they will have to isolate and pay for treatment through the nose. I'm just sitting back watching what will unfold and when the time comes I will have a great big somnomna smile for the ones who rushed to open up.

Proof of mongers is in the pudding? What does that actually mean?

Omicron is already endemic in Thailand.

Do you understand the words "horse, stable door and bolted."

Omicron is a game changer.  No point even counting cases and the way deaths are recorded needs to be reassessed. It stands to reason that patients in hospital for other compelling reasons, can't really be dying of Omicron if their respiratory symptoms are mild.  In the UK, it is thought that the over count is 40%.

I don’t think Thailand has the testing capacity to see rapidly increasing cases as in other countries or even if it has, it has no inclination to utilize it. Agree, once peaked it should then follow other countries in decline.

other countries that had not peaked with numbers still rising due to omicron decided to bin most retrictions - so the question really is - why is Thailand not doing the same, they cannot stop it spreading and with a high number now vaccinated - it is time to dump the restrictions and get back to normal.

I think Thailand should increase their testing by at least 10x.

Not so much to find positive cases because we know they are there, but to find out how many has delta and how many has omicron, and to get some realistic data, they need to test A LOT more.

When omicron are almost totally dominant, they can drop all their testing except for certain people and those admitted to hospitals.

Sweden is dropping their tests now and just tell people to stay home when sick.

Denmark which is the country that tested most during the entire pandemic drop the quick tests march 6 and they are now talking about decreasing PCR tests too.

No need to keep spending 2 billion danish kroner (10 billion baht) each month on tests when we know it's omicron BA.2 that's almost 100% dominant.

We also decreased the restrictions in Denmark for positives with omicron, so now if you get tested positive with omicron you can actually go back to work 5 days later even if you still have mild symptoms.

And no need for negative tests anymore after infection.

Omicron really changed the game plan.

So Thailand.

Test A LOT more for a few weeks and find out if Delta is gone or not.

If it is, no reason to keep same strict rules.

Learnt to live with it, but make sure omicron is dominant.

Only about 24% of Thailand's population has received the third booster dose of COVID vaccine that the medical authorities say is necessary to fully protect against Omicron. And only about 62% of Thailand's age 60 and older population has even received TWO vaccine doses thus far. (See MoPH chart below)

Then you have the issue of waning vaccine effectiveness for all those who got their original shots earlier in 2021, especially those who got the documentedly least effective Sinovac vaccine that was prevalent here in the early going.

Right now, there are 50,000 plus people hospitalized in Thailand with COVID, and a slightly larger number in field hospitals or other alternate facilities (dunno if that counts home quarantine or not).

I  believe I saw in a news report the other day regarding Sweden dropping a lot of their COViD restrictions, they said something like 80% or so of their older population had received 3 COVID doses (largely mRNA in their case).  Thailand is nowhere close to that.

"Andersson said 80% of all Swedes over the age of 50 have now received three vaccine doses."

Unlikely to close borders but want to stop reporting infections whilst still having restrictions on incoming tourists. You want to stop reporting numbers, then remove all restrictions for incoming tourists, maybe just a negative test before flight. No more test on arrival, 5th day test and no enforced hospital quarantine. Removing daily reporting of infections whilst still having restrictions and hospitalisation of tourists is not going boost the tourism numbers, will have the opposite effect in my opinion.

Raw deaths all causes numbers are available for January. As for the previous months, the number of excess deaths (1686) compared to previous year January (2021), is around 3 times the official Covid deaths number (475).  That's around 54 excess deaths per day in January.

The impact on deaths of the current Omicron wave should be observed  in February/March, as there is usually a delay of around 2/3 weeks between infection and deaths.

Thailand's shambolic vaccination campaign unfortunately coming home to roost.

In the UK covid now has a similar mortality rate to seasonal flu.

That's what happens when omicron hits a fully boosted population wall.

Here we go……..

Tough Covid measures likely for Valentine’s Day and Songkran

Covid-19 preventive measures are likely to be increased for Valentine’s Day next week and Songkran in April as daily infections have exceeded 10,000 for several days now.

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration’s (CCSA) Operation Centre on Thursday is considering proposing tougher preventive measures for Valentine’s Day and Songkran, according to a Government House source.

This is another way of seeing that same COVID era excess mortality data for Thailand (with data for the most recent times likely less accurate because of delays in reporting.)
