Sanook Thai Caption: Selling things in a parking area

A video that Sanook said was "sut viral" (more viral than viral) was garnering a lot of interest from the Thais after it was posted online.

As the media said - arguments of this nature can occur anywhere. This one happened to be in Malaysia but it might just as well have been Thailand.

The video is seven minutes long - fast forward to 4 minutes plus for the start of the action.

It involves people setting up a fruit stall and blocking a parking space.

Sanook said this kind of thing - using public space to sell stuff - was a problem everywhere.

Thais often like to claim they are the Land of Smiles and calm ones in the region and that their neighbors are the hotheads who resolve things with violence.

As the women and men in this video demonstrate - on this occasion they may have a point!

At least some bystanders appeared to attempt to diffuse the situation, but then sadly became embroiled in the dispute.  Compared to some countries this is mild though and thankfully no one resorted to weapons.

Thai violently murders Thai over trivial matter; Thai violently murders Thai over trivial matter; Thai violently murders Thai over trivial matter; Thai violently murders Thai over trivial matter; Malaysian people fight over a parking space - "See?!!  It's not the Thais that solve things with violence!!!"

Terrible writing.  You really cannot nullify a generalisation with a single example like this.

I know of many cases where people pulled guns and shot others dead in disputes over parking...

In the 80's the last pay toll area on the autostrada just before Naples gunfire used to happen a lot. People trying to get their cars into the front at the pay booth.

Do you really thinkit's a good idea to get involved?

Better to sit back and let them knock 7 bells out of each other. Too many cases everywhere nowadays where knives and guns appear.

Does publicizing these videos serve any purpose beyond feeding voyeurism and stoking fear?

I’ve lived in Thailand almost 25 years now, had a car the whole time,  ever once have I come across people getting violent over parking spaces.

The only times I’ve ever had anyone approach me regarding parking, they’ve been polite and respectful, just like the vast majority of people are polite and respectful.

I would also be very unhappy if a vendor turned up outside my shop selling the same produce and blocking access to the parking spaces people use for my shop

Had a car but parked at home most of the time? People here just simply park anywhere they like causing traffic Jam and blocking other cars from coming out of their parking space. Walking further away for parking or spending time to find a proper parking space is non existence here especially in Bangkok.

No I haven’t only parked at home, silly idea.

News is generally for entertainment.  So, like most news, no.

Doesnt seem to be about anyone wanting to park but a dispute between 2 neighbouring traders. And as has already been pointed out, at least no weapons were used.

Some people just   feel the need to park  directly  outside a  shop doorway, so they can just open  their  car door and fall inside.    I really think    shops   could  aleviate this problem  for the  poor  devils  b y providing a drive through service. Its a problem not restricted to any one  country.
