I don't know if you've been to Surat before, but theres not much there to see. Islanders go there to shop (they have some large stores such as Makro) but nothing else much. I don't know about mid-level hotels, but the hotels I stayed in there are so cheap you might as well go 4*. Last time I stayed at a hotel called something like the WinWan, very nice, all amenities, room service etc. But you might be better off going straight to Phangan.

It is not much in Surat Thani for the foreign visitor.

There are several hotels, if you walk down the long wide street away from the pier, no problem to find accomodation there.

I had to stay overnight one time and used the WangTai Hotel, but it is a bit outside, near the BigC, excellent rooms and swimmingpool, baht 1000,-

Driving my rent-a-car, I continue to Kanom Beach, on the mainland, just opposite of Koh Samui.

Not really necessary, to continue to Koh Samui, I like Khanom, about 70 km south-east of Surat Thani. Several good hotels there...

There is a ferryboat from Khanom to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, timetable:

Moondragon.........if it's not too late or even for future reference, i live in Surat so get intouch if you want some info. As for hotels, the 'Bandon' next to 7/11 is quiet and clean with fan for around 250-300B and it's right in the center. The 'Wang Tai' is nowhere near 'Big C' but it is a very nice hotel for around 750-1000+B, all ameneties. Just 10mins or so from the river road.

Hope this helps a bit :o
