BANGKOK (NNT) - The government hopes to improve Thailand’s position in the United States’ Trafficking in Persons report.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon on Wednesday presided over a meeting of the government committee on the prevention and suppression of human trafficking. The objective was to follow up on the progress to improve Thailand’s status on the US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. He urged related agencies to follow the recommendations provided in the 2022 Interim Assessment Report given to 45 countries in the Tier 2 watchlist.

According to deputy secretary-general to the prime minister Pol Gen Thammasak Witchayara, the government is currently establishing a trafficking victims screening center with cooperation from the Immigration Bureau, the Royal Thai Police Headquarters, the Labour Ministry, and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society. The center will create a system that connects to the international human trafficking database, ensuring that victims receive legal services in accordance with international human rights standards. He said that the project is already around 80% complete, with renovations and necessary equipment being installed at the facility.

Thailand was demoted from Tier 2 to Tier 2 Watchlist in 2021. The government hopes that its efforts to combat human trafficking would allow Thailand to be reinstated on the Tier 2 list in 2022.

They've been working on this for like 7 years and have not improved.  Maybe if they stopped doing so much business with China they would magically move up in rankings?  Stupid Thais trying to play at the big table with the USA, and not knowing how the game actually works.

"Exiled Former Police General Speak Out After 6 Years

BANGKOK -- A former police general who fled Thailand to seek refuge in Australia after his anti-human trafficking works threatened his safety broke silence after more than six years on Saturday.

In a video conference from Australia with Move Forward Party MP Rangsiman Rome and Progressive Movement member Pannika Wanich, Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin who once led Thai police’s anti-human trafficking team, particularly on the trafficking of the Rohingya people, spoke of the joy of being able to talk about his fears publicly after he claimed that those at the very top echelon of Thai powers had a hand in the deadly Rohingya trafficking which treated human no better than animals.

Things would have been different if Thailand was truly democratic and with an honest administration, he said. Paween said he fled Thailand in Nov 2015 after his investigation into mass graves at migrant camps was halted after five months by influential people in the government, including the military and police themselves.
