Can someone give me a quick reminder please - how soon before a new extension [Marriage] can an application be made.  Current one expires on 17 March.

You can do it now since you are within the 30 days window that most offices use.

But do please note, the under consideration period doesn't start from the date that you apply for your extension unfortunately but from the date your current extension ends. So the date that you have to go back will be somewhere in April!

The would depend upon the office where he is applying. Some still start the 30 days from the day the application is done.
