Importing An Atv And A Bass Boat With Outboard Motor To Thailand

I don't know if this has been ask, but how much trouble should I expect if I try to import my Yamaha 400 Big Bear 4 Wheeler and a 17' Aluminum bass boat with a 70 HP outboard Johnson motor from the US to Thailand? Are there any restrictions concerning these?

From what I've read in other threads (about importing cars)...it's not worth the time, trouble, and expense.

The duties imposed are many times the worth of your property, and are at the whim of officials hoping to impound your stuff.

I'm no expert.....just passing along what I heard.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

By the time you get your stuff over you will have way exceeded the value of new items Duty on my 2003 Ford Ranger in 2004 would have been$23,700 & I only paid about $ 18,000 U.S. out the door.And then the price of shipping

The Johnson motor Do not bother as they do not use Johnson or Evinrude motors, Yamaha Yamaha Yamaha & nit noi Mercury Suzuki & Tohotsu.

I sold my 16 ft. inflatable + 40 hp suzuki (which would be perfect in Pattaya)

The problem with a Johnson you would have to get parts from America & The U.K.

Up to you..........but the duty + shipping will break your back. Boats are fairly cheap out here.

Import Duty on ATV is 60% as they are classified as "rich boys toys:, be better off selling yours and buying a locally made one here

Of what I have been told by custom agents & reading custom website,boats are duty free.But told still have to pay VAT.

Correction the price was $23,700 for the duty & shipping. vehicles or bikes or planes originating from the U.S. pays almost the full price of the vehicle from customs.

I was quoted by the Honolulu Customs dept in Hawaii.

I am not sure about duties on boats But I Know Johnston & Evinrude are made exclusively in the U.S. & would end up with a Yamaha replacement due to lack of replacement parts. I live in Pattaya a real boat kinda town & have seen ZERO Johnstons or Evinrudes & They are great workhorses, but very very unpopular as tarrifs for getting the parts here would be Hideous ! And Boats are cheaper here than the U.S.

Boat possible and cost effective.. I even know of people importing watercraft from the states for profit.

Importing a "boat" is tax free thanks to a lot of lobbying by People (read megayacht) in Phuket. If you go to the Phuket Gazette Website there is a big write up on it.

The trick is to get the "boat" sent as a "boat" and there be no reference to a motor, accessories and boat AT ALL. Motors DO invite tarriffs. You will have to pay 7% VAT on the CIF declared value of the boat! Normal! This means if you prepay the freight in the USA and you have to tell customs that you bought the boat as a package (with invoice) all up including CIF Bangkok freight you will be fine!

If customs quibble about the price just tell them "I got a good deal"! It is essential that you find a clearance agent that has experience in "boats" it will be advisable. A little grease is necessary but not a lot. It is not as bad as other posters have made it out ot be!

Oh! Don't import a Johnson outboard motor as the service really sucks over here. Get a Yamaha and you will be fine!

I know the local prices are bad!  I am in the process of importing an AB Inflatable from the US or the UK as the local dealer in Thailand wants to rip me a third you know what.

It is really funny as when I quoted them the US price and import duties they wanted they wanted 40% more as their cut.   For what?  Thing is that they are buying outboard engines from the local Yamaha dealer and it is because of this that they are paying huge amounts of tax that is of course being passed on to us.

Buy a boat and payone price and you should be fine.  It is important to pay VAT as you will need this receipt to show when you register it on the road and on the water.
