A Facebook page called "Patibatkan Maa Fao Ban" claimed that the local authority in Ratchathewa district of Samut Prakan had spent almost a billion baht on fancy lampposts since 2013.

The district was at the center of a major scandal last year after administrators approved the spending of millions on yet more "kinarees" - Thai mythical figures that adorn the lampposts.

"Lamppostgate" spread nationwide with many areas investigated but little done to stop the highly criticized spending amid the public hardships of the pandemic.

Now the Facebook page said that Ratchathewa were planning to spend even more in the latest round.

720 more posts with kinarees are set to cost 94,821 baht each coming in at a whopping 68.2 million in total, reported Siam Rath

At least they are saving on running costs with the solar lights.

Assuming they are real solar panels of course and not powered off his local friend's generators!!

I'll go and get the handcuffs now!

Just check what car the Mayor is driving - Merc for sure.

Are you sure it is not a Lampostorghini (EV) rather than a Merc he is lighting up the roads with?

always crashing into them ......????

Perhaps the drivers are too busy studying, wondering and blessing the local Governor for the ornate Thai Symbolism on the lampposts that they cannot concentrate on the actual roads of enlightenment!

Going green always costs more at the start.

They're not solar panels, they're umbrellas, the things underneath are way too precious to be allowed to get wet!
