Thailand’s Disease Control Department’s Dr. Sumanee Wacharasint stressed today (Thursday) the need for people who are at high risk of serious complications to get vaccinated urgently, as the death toll from COVID-19 reached this year’s new high of 74 cases yesterday.

As the daily death toll rises and exceeds projections, she said this is a grim warning to people with underlying diseases, such as cancer, chronic kidney problems, obesity and the bedridden, as well those older than 60 to get vaccinated urgently, be it their first, second or third dose.

Of the 74 deaths recorded today, she disclosed that 48% were unvaccinated, 6% had received one dose, 35% had received two doses more than three months ago and 9% had received two doses less than three months ago. Only 1% had received three doses. The youngest was 26 years old and the oldest, 97.

In the rush to mass vaccination most governments failed to put enough effort into a structured plan to vaccinate the most vulnerable. Everything was driven by the individual registering etc when for the vulnerable it should have been the govt reaching out.

If we learn anything from this pandemic it is hopefully how governments can become better at pro-actively delivering health services

Actually on that score, Thailand seems to have done pretty well. As a 79-year old I got my three jabs without any trouble and, for my wife and I at least, the Morprom app/vaccination certificate works perfectly (far better in fact than the British equivalent costing 35 billion pounds).
