Top Ten Ultra-violent Films Of All Time

A good Vincent Price movie, if I remember correctly, was Dr Phibes.... it may be tame now, but for the time period it was nasty.

The Freddy Kruger series were 'exciting' too but considered tame by today's standards.

You have to wonder how far the genre will go.

Graphic snuff films as the norm? :o

You have to wonder how far the genre will go.

I would rather the gore elements had stayed at Dr Phibes level with believable story lines and convincing actors. Some did, "Seven" is a great movie and I would quite happily watch it again, "I spit on your grave" isn't and I would rather have all copies of it buried under a tonne of rubble.

Gratuitous violence just to shock is not ok in my book. "Saw" tested my limit on that, the story line being the only thing that saved it.

I think one of the nastiest films I've seen, that smacks of the truth was " Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" with David Bowie.

It just shows the lengths people can go to utterly degrade and ultimately murder them.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned yet the average Thai/Japanese/Chinese movie. You can't show a nipple but it is ok to have a person cut in half with a halberd from the back of a horse/elephant. I went with a friend and her KIDS to see the film Ghost Train and it was a full on slash film (ok using Slash in the American not English context just in case some of you golden shower freaks were getting excited). Another one we saw had a girl cut her wrists with a razor blade after she had repeatedly stuck a knife into her cheating boyfriend's chest and lastly between the eyes. He was on the floor and she was standing over him with the blood dripping down onto his face. My friend's kids weren't in the least bit phased by it but their mother was crying and told me afterwards that she thought it so romantic <deleted>!! Thought of dumping him and moving on have we?

Yes indeed. " A better tomorrow ( 1986 ) " with Chow Yun-fat, is about as violent as you can get. John WOO can make them as bloody as any in Hollywood and then some.

A true edit for your titillation.

After arrest in Hong Kong some years ago, a very violent USA based Chinese gang were asked why they did not put up a fight, as they were know in NY as never going down without one. Their reply was they had all been brought up on such pap as John WOO and were scarred shit-less of the old martial skills of the local Bobbies. How little did they know. ( Thank God )

I'm surprised that Natural Born Killers didn't feature on the list, it may not be a gore fest, but it does tend to condone killing your parents, the police and any innocent or othwerwise bystander that takes your fancy just to expunge your angst.

Murder, More Murder, Mayhem, Murder and Music. What a brilliant film.

Ah yes Itchi the Killer. When he cuts his own tongue off, thats wicked!

I should have mentioned a Chinese film I saw in Lao a few years back, it was about a WW2 Japanese concentration camp in Manchuria or somewhere, where they did Nazi type medical experiments on prisoners. Absolutely freaking horrifying. And these cute little girls, well early twenties, brought it around to watch with me and my girlfriend. I had to pretend I was asleep so I could close my eyes.

Classic riot scene when Rage against the Machine's 'bombtrack' comes in.

I watched Battle Royale again the other day, still a great film.

The tragedy is that unit 731 existed. Try a search for it and be prepared to be really horrified.

Yep, it sure did. I studied in Harbin; the Chinese people there still hate the Japanese for those atrocities . Medical experiments more horrifying than what the Nazi docs did.

Ah yes Itchi the Killer. When he cuts his own tongue off, thats wicked!

I liked it when he unhooked his mouth, LOL!

Oh Ichi, you are so frightening, this is great, you are freaking me out, this is so cool!

The Hostel. It's a sick and gruesome film.

Yes. But I think it might have elememts of truth in it. That's what is really horrifying.

Yeah, you're right. Now that I think about it................ scary!

Well, we won't be going to Eastern Euro or wherever anytime soon, I guess, GFawn. I'm sure this sh*t really happens. The nurse and the chicks that coax the kids into the false safety net are the scariest in a way. Who can you trust? Shudder.

NBK is a disturbing film in many ways because I can see it happening in real life. The prison sequence was heavily edited in Australia but the deluxe DVD edition had the deleted scenes, including the killing of the snitch bitches and the part where Tommy Lee Jones (the Warden) has his head put on a stick.

I think the important point with these films is that in life there is violence and death. A film can portray that violence in great detail and realism but still have have meaning and merit. Where the problem arises is when violence and/or sex is used gratuitously that the film loses out and becomes a slash and hack.

People have a propensity for violence especially when it is one step removed. I have no doubt that if we had public executions in the town sqare people would turn up in their droves to witness it. I have no doubt that if they brought back the roman gladitorial games it would be a sell out. I have been to the Burmese/Thai fights on the borders several times over many years and they are the closest thing you will see to full on fight to the finish, especially on the last day between challenge teams. Guys wrap rope around their fists and arms, feet and legs and soak them in salt and vinegar. The beatings are severe and there are very serious bets plus issues of national and personal pride involved. The winner can become rich (relatively) and the loser, crippled. Over the years people have tried to film it and the Army (both sides) prevent it. They run it and control it, plus take a percentage out of it. The fights have run for hundreds of years and will go on for many more. It is entertainment that people want to see and that is not much different that going to see Freddy or Jason cut up some one with a meat cleaver on film.

Rumours of snuff films have been around for many years and I personally have no doubt they exist. Where there is money to made there will be someone willing to do it and all "to the sound of gentle clapping"

True, Cawbie. I just reread Boonie's thread title, which was violence not gore. Mel Gibson's Aztec movie was full of both. Violence -- war movies about Roman times through to modern day all have that.

But getting to your point, CB, when I came back to sweetiepie Canada and then logged onto a local forum, I got anything but sweetiepie. Crikes! These people are nasty, and yes, public floggings and killings would be well attended here, I am sure. But oh it's so non-PC today to say that in public.

If the western world was as caring and polite as it says it is, horror/gore/violence flicks would never have viewers or make money. Hardeeharhar.

Hit the nail on the head ( pardon the pun ).

Supply and demand in all things. Hostel was amazingly successful. A lot of people must have liked it.................a lot.

Ogrish.com, truly sick and again truly popular.

The only good thing being in the 50's when Dorris Day and the like commanded the silver screen, on average 900,000 people were killed a year in war/terror. Today 100,000. Perhaps watching it helps.

haha, Limpy. Statistics. From where? They all lie. 5 billion plus people on the planet and only 100,000 killed? What, tabulated in organised war zones? Big fat f** lie.

This months MQ ( a history publication with a military bent ).

However have to say it is American so......................

Reservoir Dogs is extremely realistic.

That's got my vote, (the torture scene with Michael Madsen was superb) along with pretty much everything else Tarentino does. But, the two that stand out as chilling to the bone were The Shining and my favorite, Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs.

All the slash and gore scary ones, etc., are fun, but those two I think are two of the best.
