Republicans lecture first black woman nominated to Supreme Court

Who said this? A hardcore Republican or Biden?

"It is time for a woman to sit among our highest jurists," "I will also seek out women to appoint to other federal courts in an effort to bring about a better balance on the federal bench."

You infer that Republicans were concerned about Biden's pick because she is black. That is flat out wrong. Republicans (and every single solitary person with a sense of fair play and justice) were con

Yeah, but these right wing nutters have to get their 15 minutes of fame.  And of course, raise money off it from other right wing nutters.

  • More race baiting nonsense.   Identity politics continues to divide and weaken the countries in which it festers.

Biden thinks she's "exceptionally qualified". That would mean he considers her the best qualified of all candidates and I've seen no argument that she isn't.

I've seen no credible criticism of Jackson that challenges her suitability for the job. All I see is dog whistling about reverse racism and the usual right wing sociopaths complaining about empathy. Pretty disgusting, all things considered.

Would it bother you if the team carrying out your heart surgery is ALL WHITE and ALL MALE?

I bet you would insist on having your surgery postponed until such time as there's at least one (black) woman in the team.

Surgery has absolutely NOTHING to do with the highest court in the land. The illustration you provide is specious and completely invalid. Comparing apples and oranges. No one is concerned about the race and gender makeup of a medical team.  In politics, blacks and women have been excluded for so much of our history that it is ludicrous to complain when a candidate is deliberately chosen because of her race and gender even though her qualifications are clearly superior.

I agree, it's pretty disgusting to believe the only way a black woman can get a position is by selective hiring. Very racist.

Clearly, you don't believe she was the best qualified for the job but won't / can't say why. Accusing her of not being the best person because she's black.

The old Woke switcharoo of what a person says.  She isn't the problem, the system who only considered Black Women for the job is. Very simple to understand.

She is exceptionally qualified, more so than the last three appointees combined.

How many members here claimed that because Biden said he wanted a black woman it meant that he wouldn't consider a white male?

An Economist-YouGov poll this week indicated that a plurality of adults, 42 percent, believe Jackson should be confirmed, against 25 percent who said she should not.

A sizable 33 percent of adults in that poll — which concluded on Tuesday, the first day Jackson was questioned in earnest — said they were not sure either way.

We are way past the selection process. Why are people still talking about that? Like a Fox News white resentment whining broken record.

She's clearly massively qualified and she clearly will be confirmed.

I humbly suggest that people stop responding to the race baiting broken record brigade.

Don't feed them so maybe they'll stop.

And yet after 115 appointments to the Supreme Court that’s exactly what it took.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to illustrate the point you made - Yes, I agree Racism is at the heart of it, ingrained institutional racism.

Biden just cut the racists out of the equation, predictable fabricated outrage has followed.

Without judicial activism, most government positions in the United States would still be held by white men. Many of those quoting Martin Luther King these days, are the kind of racists that he fought most of his life. The electorate in the United States is so prejudiced and stupid that black and female candidates have little chance of being appointed or elected based solely on qualifications.

Indeed. All that is necessary is 50 votes in a the Senate and the support of the VP. Apparently she has at least got that.

"So Ms Jackson, can you give us your definition of what a women is ?  "

"I dont know im not a biologist "

That answer alone should  disqualify her from holding any position of power.

Republicans already knew she had the votes locked up so they took the opportunity to regurgitate Fox talking points to agitate & trigger their base. Ya know, morons.

Yes, previously the SCOTUS were given the job due to their colour/race . Now the USA have gotten rid of those racial practices and people are now given the job due to their abilities , rather than their race .

Actually, previously they were given their positions because of their religious affiliations and their willingness to break down the separation of church and state. This is why the SC is effectively reversing Roe v Wade and supported dark money donations to electoral campaigns.

So prior to the election candidate Biden considers who he might appoint to the SC.

He’s presented a number of likely candidates and settles on the superb and highly qualified Ketanji Brown Jackson.

He then, during the election campaign, offers a vote gleaning teaser along the lines of; ‘I’ve decided who I’ll nominate to the SC and she’s black’.

Que Outrage (pun intended).

Like every other nomination to the SC, Brown Jackson was selected by recommendation. String pulling and influence peddling.

There is no ‘open, transparent and fair competitive selection process’, like the objectively ‘best man/woman for the job’ it doesn’t exist, never has existed,

Unlike almost every other nominee to the SC, Ketanji Brown Jackson is superbly qualified and she will be the only SC Justice on the bench with experience of representing poor and ordinary blue collar Americans facing the justice system.

I look forward to toasting her appointment to the SC with a rather good Single Malt.

Something that hasn't come up in this thread is that for the GOP senators in the questioning lineup this was about the 2024 presidential campaign.  Sort of a pre-pagent preview.  The moderator (Durbin) even at one point told KBJ, during some questioning (by Cruz?) "you don't have to answer, he's only going to interrupt you."  Lacking the solid evidence they needed, like a pic of her eating a baby in the basement of a pizza place, all that stuff about human trafficking and kiddie porn was on-message to appeal to the believers in the stuff of the group between the letters P and R -- with them all that stuff goes with the Big Lie like peas and carrots.  Marsha Blackburn declaring that she cares about children, as if that makes her a saint or something.  Manchin said the same thing about no supporting the infrastructure bill, he just couldn't do that to his grandchildren. The fringe is now the GOP base. Such caring souls...

Not the time yet for a discussion of the hopefuls, but consider this a prelim peek.  I'm surprised Rick Scott wasn't in there, he's the type who would sink to any degrading act to become pres.

To be fair, I'll mention that for the Dems it was the Bret I Like Beer hearings, and sure enough three of them showed up in the 2020 primaries.  I wrote all three off for doing a lousy job with Bret: again, that's a different discussion.

Howard Stern recently said that the US no longer has a two-party system.  We only have the Democrats and the crazies.  He's right, of course.
