It may be a mistake to confuse gross incompetence with evil intent. While the regime wants to hold on to power, it remains clueless about running a civilian government and how to do the best for people.

That may be so but at the end of the day they only do what someone tells them.

They are doing what is best for Thai people, not common farang.

In what manner did this unelected PM take the country over in 2014? Did they just walk in to parliament and say "right you lot, all out now, we are taking over"?

Suppose the elected government said "no you are not, we will fight to stay here, we are the elected government"?

Would Prayut and his generals then get their armed soldiers with their guns and force them out?

Now, fast forward to the present day. Suppose the protesters arrive and say to Prayut, "we want you to leave now and let the opposition take over."

What is the first thing that Prayut and his generals would do? Would they get their armed soldiers to come and force them out, even shoot them?

If you go by Thailand's history, that is what they would do. Is that what would actually happen?

They'll do anything to stay in power.

If that means shooting then so be it.

Absolutely correct. They are simply opening the door for other nations that are run by courageous adults. Most tourists have forgotten Thailand by now. The constantly changing policies and the silly restrictions are not science based. The incoming tourists are taking ALL the risks, while there is no risk to Thailand. The real zombies are here. They are not foreigners.

The extent to which Prayuth, Anutin and Phiphat have destroyed tourism and the Thai economy is unforgivable. They may be remembered for generations. As the guys who set Thailand on a path from a developed nation, to lower 3rd world status, at 93rd place in terms of GDP, 20 years from now. The nation has been moving backwards since the dinosaur realm started.

They have already turned Thailand from the tiger of SE Asia, to a sorry, rabid, whiny, anemic alley cat.

But they don’t care as much about that as they do changing Thailand from sex capital to boring, ‘squeaky clean’ -land. That was always their agenda; covid being a convenient medium. Dangerous manchildren dinosaurs.

Things will get worse before they'll get any better. The high cost of energy and generally higher inflation worldwide are poison to tourism.

Not really Thailand's fault, but if they did away with the insane Thailand Pass, they could scoop up more of those who are still willing and able to travel.

I agree I planned another holiday in Thailand but put it on the back burner till all restrictions are liftet

There were 92 Covid-19 fatalities, the highest so far in the latest wave, and an all-time high of 28,379 cases during the previous 24 hours, the Public Health Ministry reported on Friday.

When the concept of reopening to foreign visitors was first considered, insurance and the provision of quarantine was required. A number of well connected organisations and individuals agreed to provide these services. Having established these business links with the new "system" for entering the country they will not allow this system, and the benefits/profits it brings to lapse.

They are influential (wealthy) and are able to bring that influence to bear upon the decision makers.

Remember here, the various agencies and ministries are run as personal fiefdoms by their executives and ministers. Their is little common purpose or central direction. What cooperation there is centres around political loyalties, which are often fluid and driven by opportunity. The "influential", understanding and exploiting that are thus agable to exert considerable influence.

The damage they are doing to the medium and long term interests of the tourist industry, if considered at all, are regarded as collateral damage and subordinate to the immediate benefits.

It is not so much a matter of pulling strings as a product of crony government; but if anyone can be said to be pulling strings it is these cronies.

Nailed it!@herfiehandbag  And to be honest, I suspect there are a lot of Pheu Thai and other high ranking members of other parties that don't support this government who are benefitting.

Just because they are not the PM or cabinet members doesn't mean they aren't at the trough, but still complaining.

This has been the case forever - regardless of said government in place.

A simple and straight forward examination of Thai history and historiography will show.

The insurance companies and the big hotels are in total control and Covid never had anything to do with foreigners being allowed to enter. The super rich have some serious karma coming their way. I predict a total economic crash before the end on 2022 that will make 1997 look like nothing. Their money will be worthless. Has anyone noticed all the hotels and resorts being built everywhere that have been empty before 2020 and Covid ? Its all corruption money! In my small town there were only four resorts that were mostly empty now over forty and still building more all empty. Can anyone explain this?
