During an unexpected event such as this, most people are so shocked, they remain frozen to the spot; they need to focus their attention deciding whether what is happening in front of them is a threat, a joke, a harmless incident.

I wouldn't try to stop the attack without some sort of shielding and weapon. Besides, the RTP would blame any hapless tourist who step in for the attack.

Sadly yes.  I would have to completely understand the situation, and know for a fact, if intervening, I wouldn't be injured.  I have people depending on me being alive, and they are more important than total strangers.

 

I'll take a risk in a situation I can control, like saving someone from drowning.   But a nutter with a weapon, I prefer not to be the 'good samaritan getting killed' in the next news blip.

I read this kind of behavior so many times.
Looks to me that the "standard procedure" to punish these perpetrators, ie. jailterm, is not deterrent at all.
Something seems to be missing by these criminals that defines them as "Once a criminal, always a criminal" and other ways of punishment needs to be found ungently.

Or you can concede that it's not about punishment or rehabilitation.  It's about warehousing them where they can't harm anyone else.  For a long, long time.

Heat of the moment split decisions can either make you a hero or another victim???? I have been both in these situations, and in one instance could easily cost me my life for someone who, it turned out, was an ungrateful criminal.

One day my girlfriend was having a complete meltdown while driving the scooter, me on the back. Crazy shouting and swerving, as I didn't feel like falling off, I turned the key off and took it out. Still crazy shouting and jumping, so I restrain her by pinning her arms to her side. As she's wiggling and screaming, two Thai guys come up and ask if she needs some help with the foreigner. I let go, and she promptly jumps off the scooter, runs to the side of the road and picks up a rock. The Thai guys run off, with her chasing them and waving the rock in the air.
