A man in northern Hai Phong City was arrested Monday for the alleged sexual assault of two girls aged 8 and 13.

VN Express reported that Nguyen Van Binh, 67, stands accused of "raping children aged below 16", the police of Ngo Quyen District said.

On Saturday, the two sisters visited their grandparents on Cau Dat Street, where Binh is their neighbor.

The family later found "abnormal signs" on their bodies.

The 8-year-old girl subsequently said she had been sexually assaulted by Binh.

Following the family's report, the police determined that Binh had lured the 8-year-old girl into his home and sexually assaulted her.

Binh also confessed that he had sexually assaulted the 13-year-old girl multiple times.

Raping a child between 13 and 16 years of age multiple times is punishable by up to 20 years in jail, according to Vietnam's Penal Code.

Those raping a child under ten face death.

Sexual assaults constitute 80 percent of child abuse cases in Vietnam, according to a 2019 report by the Ministry of Public Security.
