Hello,

I was wondering what were the administrative obligations regarding a car or motorcycle when moving to live in another province?

It is possible to travel anywhere in Thailand regardless of where the car/bike is registered, however when fully moving to a new province, I am wondering:

  • Am I supposed to do anything in regards to the car/bike admin after moving (such as changing the registered address)? And would changing the registered address require to get a new plate as well? And is there a maximum timeframe to do all that?
  • If anything needs to be done, is it just “ideal but not really needed” (like changing the address on the driving license), or could it have some bad consequences (such as fines or not being able to renew the tax and insurance in the new province)?

I’ve searched on the forum, but the advice are all over the place: no need to do anything, needing to change the registered address after moving there, or even having to visit the DLT in Bangkok first to request the province transfer. Still not quite sure how to proceed.

Come to think of it, the main thing I can think of is in case of a fine sent by mail, the address would need to be up to date, so I can see the need for that. Not sure what the whole process entails though (change of plate, etc).

Any feedback on that process would be appreciated.

Thanks

There is a law which says you have to update your address, but this is one of the many Thai laws which isn't enforced.

So you don't have to do anything. You can tax the vehicle in any province.

If you want to pay fines that come by mail then you should of course change the address or you won't get them, but who pays them anyway....
