Portugal approves sale of Chelsea football team by Russian oligarch Abramovich

LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The Portuguese government has given its authorization for the sale of Chelsea by Roman Abramovich, who needed approval because he is a Portuguese passport holder.

 

The decision by Portugal was announced Thursday, a day after the British government approved the sale of Chelsea by the sanctioned Russian oligarch to a consortium fronted by a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

 

Portugal’s rubber stamp was also needed for the deal worth 2.5 billion pounds ($3.1 billion) — the highest price ever for a sports team — to go through.

Putin is gearing up changing laws to confiscate Western companies and assets in Russia. Maybe Portugal should do the same to this Oligarch. He can ask Putin to reimburse him.

So a sanctioned oligarch is able to sell assets and bank the money?

I thought the sanctions in place were to prevent anyone having any financial dealings with these people?

Or is this just a convenience to stop Chelsea going bankrupt?

He is not banking the sale proceeds. Money goes to a frozen UK bank account until the government has received further assurances that the money will solely go to support of humanitarian causes in Ukraine.

His stewardship of Chelsea was an amazing thing for the club. Man! The repercussions of this Putin madness are huge!!!! Let's not forget the people being bombed, shot, and driven from their peaceful lives over there.
