Foreigner in serious condition after crashing big racing bike on corner in Pattaya area

Siam Rath published several pictures of the aftermath of a motorcycle accident involving a foreigner in the Pattaya area.

 

The man - aged about 30 but who had no ID with him - was riding a blue Suzuki with racing tires. It had Bangkok plates.

 

The bike appeared to have lost its front wheel and was lying in what appeared to be fuel or oil.

 

The victim was covered in blood when Sawang Boriboon rescue arrived at the road between Pattaya and Ban Bowin.

He was given first aid at the scene then rushed to Bang Lamung Hospital with severe injuries.

 

It happened near the Map Prachan reservoir at the end of Soi Prapha Nimit around 9 am Sunday. 

 

A witness said they saw the foreigner driving fast and fail to negotiate a bend. 

 

He slid a fair way along the road. 

 

Another member of the public called emergency services. 

 

More about this as we hear of it.

I see that at least he was wearing a helmet, that should help.

 

Perhaps next time if he does recover, he will put some new tyres on as that tread looks pretty worn, they are not slicks (racing tyres) from what I can see.

Tread is for wet roads. If it's dry, slicks are better.

So who thinks another gofund me page will pop up soon ? As a foreigner he was in theory breaking the law anyway as he had no id on him according to the article hence no passport on him so perhaps the next we will read perhaps is no insurance, expired visa etc etc

Slicks are for off road, i.e. the track, and yes agree that they are for the dry conditions, that said, if you ride with them on public roads, you are asking for trouble, all it takes is a little drizzle and you have no grip and down you goes which could be the case here.

Only one place for big crotch rockets in Thailand, the racing tracks,  speeding on any public road or motorway is asking for trouble.

Wouldn't argue the point.  Nowadays though even road tyres look more like a cross between wets and slicks.

Slick are made for track and you need to bring them to the right temperature, around 90 degree, to make them work. And on the pic, it is badly worn tire we can seen

It's a rental for sure, no foreigner owning a nice bike like this would allow it to be neglected in this way.

Normal road tires bald on the Bike , stupid owner, can not ride with racing slicks on the public road , can be dry but sand, gravel, oil or water and you are down , would be very stupid,

I've no idea if this guy lived here or was a tourist, but driving along Thappraya Road and Second Road in Jomtien yesterday I came across several packs of farangs on small motorbikes, they looked like they were tourists on rentals, and they drove like it too, all over the shop, not looking where they're going. This is not a joke, the roads here are too busy already, mucking about on a motorbike when you're not properly trained to ride it is asking for a large hospital bill or, even worse, a much smaller bill from the crematorium. Take care out there people, it's dangerous.

Until it is becomes illegal to rent a motorbike to a tourist or any-one who does not have a valid Thai motorcycle license (which may or not be the case here), then the carnage will continue. I see the road blocks fining tourists every day for not having a license or a helmet.

 

But the cause remains the rental companies giving out the bikes in the first place. Maybe one hand feeds the other .... but if you "want" to stop these accidents get  to the cause of the problem and eliminate it.

It doesn't say if he owned it or it was a rental. Like you I am thinking it is a rental. So often Thai's rent out motorcycles to people without  a license on motorcycles from any country who don't even know how to rider, just for the buck.

There is nothing wrong with big bikes. It's all got to do with the FW's on them.

I've been an owner of motorbikes above 1000cc for decades, I've owned a 3 bikes over 1000cc here in Pattaya. 

 

You see no reason but us bikers outnumber your reasons.

Anyone riding a bike here is dicing with death, tourists even more so. They should be warned that about 2 riders an hour die riding bikes here year round.

It was explained to me once that it was ok to come out of the side road and then drive slowly for a distance to allow other drivers to see you and overtake.

All I could do was smile and say OK!

I am not sure if having a valid Thai motor cycle licence would make any difference, considering how easily they are obtained.

Take yourself along to a DLT office when they are conducting the testing and see the farce in action, the testing for the car licence is no better.
