Popular Post JAFO
Topic seems odd I know but I was back in the States not to long ago and a group of us were out at dinner for business. Age range was 35 to mid 50's. As we all chatted a question popped up about living too long? Sure we can always say "I wanna live forever" but in reality what is realistic? The biggest debate in the discussion was modern medicine and that it medically allows people to "Live" longer but what about their quality of life? For me, I have seen numerous people start the pill regiment and pretty soon they are dropping 5 to 8 pills every morning to assist with High BP, High Cholesterol, Diabetes, etc but the meds make them feel sick and have other issues. Of course the side effects are sometime worse than the ailment the med is trying to help but what is the trade off? Of course once you start that program you get trapped with those meds and that doc and life becomes very controlled and limited. So sure, all the modern meds will allow you to live longer but is one "Really" living or just prolonging?
Popular Post JetsetBkk
Two people I know have died of cancer - one very recently. I wonder if they had known the months of "zero quality of life" awaiting them, whether they would have - or could have - ended the agony earlier.
Popular Post Lacessit
I am 79 years old. I have weaned myself off 5 medications over the last six years. A combination of diet, exercise, and mental application. I have a resting pulse rate which for my age is approaching elite athlete level. IMO there are some modern medicines which are essential for some conditions, many others it is simply getting on a pharmaceutical treadmill when lifestyle changes are just as effective. I fear not having quality of life, which is why I work at maintaining myself mentally and physically. One gets out of life what one is prepared to put into it. 15
Popular Post CharlieH
First and foremeost its your attitude toward life. You can grow old wither and die pretty damn fast if you allow that to happen. Old saying "use it or lose it" very true in my opinion. You want to sit in a chair moaning and griping at the world dont eat right or exercise regularly then you are your own worst enemy. Many ailments can be helped if not removed by a healthier attitude and lifestyle. I'm lighter stronger and healthier now than I was 10 - 15 years ago, wish I had discovered and shown interest in those things earlier because its now a lifestyle and one I enjoy. They say that if you take the average between Mother and Father, all things being equal that is roughly your estinated expiry date. In my case that would put me at 86 ! Personally bloddy hope not! I really dont want to be here that long. Lord forbid I ever get to the dribbling pissing the pants stage, I'd rather check out thanks. Die with a degree of dignity and not a burden to anyone. 12

Exact ages my Mother and father passed at in the last two years, and both from exactly as yours did, my father died of a Stomach Aorta burst, and my Mother died of COPD/Heart Failure. They smoked from the age of 14 and drank like fishes. I rarely drink and have never smoked, so what would be the guesstimate of life expectancy, I have no clue. My grandparents on my fathers side died at 97 and 99 years of age, my mothers Parents died at 52 and 56 from strokes and diabetes, of which I am the generation the diabetes attached to but only after a neck surgery where the doctor pushed so many steroids it caused the pancreas to go into a deep sleep......sucks to take diabetic medication, but I try to keep it at the minimum by my diet and exercise (45km a week of jog/walking). Goal for me is to make it to at least 80, and that is 23 more years, provided I do not get run over by a bus, or flattened by a Grab rider on the sidewalk.......

My Dad died in 1959 at 69 of a hear attack and my Mum died in 1973 at 69 of lung cancer. My brother died a few years ago at 81 from a stroke. I am 78 and still wandering along nd I am on tablets for high blood pressure. I spend about a hour a day in the mornings 5 days a week cutting the grass and scrub which is my exercise. I am determined to hang on and get my 100th birthday email from King William. Besides if I live to be 100 I will have earned my frozen pension. The downside is that my wife will be an old woman of 79. ???? 3 minutes ago, Sparktrader said: I fear boredom. Loss of purpose. Im middle aged and bored from life. I wish I had the time to be bored. When I get some spare time I edit my EBook library and look for more books to read. Dont look too far ahead, baby steps if need be, but YOU can control it, no one is gonna do it for you. Its up to you to keep swimming or drown. OneMoreFarang
This is my favorite quote about this topic: Jack Nightingale in Stephen Leather’s Nightmare Nightingale blew smoke up at the sky. ‘Everybody dies,’ he said. ‘Life is a zero sum game. The best you can do is to enjoy yourself as you go along.’ ‘But smoking shortens your life.’ ‘Maybe. But it only takes the years from the end of your life. Not the beginning or the middle.’ Jenny looked at him, confused. ‘I have absolutely no idea what you mean.’ Nightingale took another drag on his cigarette before continuing. ‘Say I live until I’m seventy-five without smoking. And say I die at seventy if I do smoke. I lose five years. But really, Jenny, what am I going to be doing during those five years? Sitting in a bedsit somewhere watching the football, assuming I’ve enough of a pension to be able to afford Sky Sport?

OneMoreFarang
I have no kids and I don't want any kids. So I won't have a family life when I am old. I see very few people who enjoy life after they are maybe 80 years old - with exceptions. I live my life here and now. I do what I like to do, eat, drink, whatever. If I would be die in 5 minutes and I could review my life I could say I had fun until the end.

I said goodbye to blood pressure tablets a week and a half ago. I had tapered down from 160 mg valsartan to 25 mg losartan in about six months. I did not realize I have significant white coat syndrome, which has led to a succession of doctors over-medicating me for about ten years. My BP increases by about 40 points any time I go near a doctor or hospital. I suggest you get your own blood pressure monitor and take readings morning and evening for a week in your home environment. Then halve your medication, and see what happens for the next week. From the sound of it, you are getting enough cardio exercise, although strictly speaking it needs to be every day. 2
