New public assembly ban imposed in Thailand to contain COVID-19

An announcement has been issued by Chief of Thailand’s defence forces, Gen. Chalermpol Srisawat, in his capacity as the chief officer in charge of solving emergency situations related to security affairs, and published in the Royal Gazette yesterday, banning unauthorised public assemblies and gatherings in the wake of clusters COVID-19 infections resulting in a rising number of hospitalisations, severe cases and fatalities, despite more people getting their vaccine booster doses.  

 

The move is in line with and complementary to the State of Emergency, in place since March 2020 and extended for the 19th time to the end of September 2022. Despite calls by pro-democracy and rights groups for the Emergency Decree and related bans to be scrapped, claiming that the restrictions have been used to suppress political movements and freedom of expression, the Decree remains and is expected to stay until at least November, when Thailand hosts the 2022 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit.

 

Under the terms of this edict, police can seek help from the military to enforce the ban and anyone who violates it is liable to two years imprisonment and/or a fine of 40,000 baht if convicted. Gatherings are allowed only when permission isgranted by authorities concerned.

What about Fullmoon parties, gatherings with 10 to 20 thousand people, where even alcohol  and other stimulus are involved.

Maybe money is a big part here for the people who allow these parties.

who cares... the police doesn't enforce,... the cases are going down,  doctors seems to be happy... Only for assembling to demonstrate against the Governement I suppose... Probably the important APEC meeeting will be excluded

wow I didn't see that coming, so we now have the military officially running  the show, sounds to me very like a silent coup d'etat has taken place

So, authorised assemblies are allowed and unauthorised ones are not, despite the risk of COVID-19 infection!

Malaysia have no lifted all travel restrictions , you can go to Malaysia same as pre covid , even unvaccinated people can go without any restorations or tests or certificates  .

   Why is Thailand different ?

The noose has always been tight. It just receives more surface attention of late......largely because it sells copy - especially in and around Bangkok, where most of this kind of activity in centered. Usually easily handled by the authorities, as all is concentrated within the particular spaces. 

 

Have to wonder how they might get on regarding real/true peasant rebellions throughout the countryside that might or might not engage itself. Remembering the good old days when the most influential resistance derived from upcountry. 

 

There has always been political public assembly restrictions and related mandates on the books. No revelations here. The authorities are just a little more brazen about such matters today.......twisting and manipulating the rhetoric.
