Air fryer - advice please

You must have bought a dodgy model. Mine is so old, that the colour has changed from red to pink. Fan and element all still fine. Haven't ever seen rust on the fans.

I understand the convenience of a drawer for when it comes to chips. But I cannot abide frozen chips anyway. I prefer to microwave whole potatoes, cut them into chunks and to toss them in extra virgin olive oil and the seasoning on my choices and then put them in a baking tin in the oven. Crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Proper ????

We are on I think our fourth convector type, the round glass thing. Still worked perfect, except the fans had rusted away... To get to the fan to inspect it you must unscrew the plate covering the element to see the condition of the fan, the fan is not made of stainless, rusts away.

Anyone that has one should do the inspection, saves all that rust dust grinding on your teeth.....????............????

I can see my fan, both through the plate and from the side. No rust. Some caramelised residue is all.

My Tefal Air Fryer has a variable temperature control. I never use the preset menu options. I find they are too aggressive. Frozen Fries at 200 degrees C for 20 minutes is far too much.

I usually do 180 for 12-14 minutes.

I  buy an olive oil spray from Tops which I use to lightly coat the air fryer tray and the meat I am cooking.

If your one only has a fixed 200 degrees C temperature, you will have to keep an eyes on things to stop them getting burnt.

Thank you for bringing some common sense back to the thread. The OP seemed to think that I was attacking him.

Have been using this Tefal 4.2L model for almost 2 years and very pleased with it.  No issues as all and looks new.  It does not have basket like some of the cheap smaller units but even for FF find can easily remove with scoop or large spoon.  Simple non digital controls of heat and time.  Had a cheap unit sold by supermarket but died within weeks.

I am on a low carb diet, I only want to cook meat. Pies and chips, get thee behind me Satan.

Still, a lower heat is needed for cooking meat. I roast a lot of meat at 170 to 180 using my convection oven.

Hopefully it will work out for you. Their air fryer with temperature control was only 200 baht more. But it's seems you specifically wanted one with a fixed temp of 200 degrees Celsius.

Having a variable temperature is essential for me.  Bowman's pies need lower for longer to heat through.  They'd be scorched  on the outside and cold in the middle at the temperature I need to get my chips crispy, but each to their own.

Though from the US, I've developed a taste for English meat pies.  Always a few in the freezer for a quick meal.

When cooking from frozen, I find they come out best using two technologies:  three to four minutes in the " 'wave" to get the insides thawed & hot, then three or four in the Air Fryer to brown and crisp the top.

If the pork pies I eat find them vile above room temp.  But then am US so no training on eating beans for breakfast or meat pies.  But find both OK.  Take frozen meat pie and put in microwave for about a minute and eat about half an hour later.  Taste OK when cool or room temp but not to my taste when above that.

I was in the Jomtien Makro today which does sell some appliances,  They two nice Air Fryers on display, an Otto and a Heier, both under B1000.

What I liked about them was both had a removable "basket" insert rather than just a removable plate. I've had both styles and find the removable basket style to be much more useful.

Anybody considering the larger "Halogen Oven" option should think about the bowl.  Most for sale and on display have a large glass bowl. It's nice to be able to easily see the food cooking but the bowl is very heavy and care has to be taken when washing it with hands slippery from soap; easy to drop and shatter.   There are models available for about the same price with a stainless steel bowl. It is much lighter than the glass bowl and no risk of shattering if it drops.  Another advantage is you can put it on a stove and make sauces and gravies directly.

The stainless models are a bit harder to find but they are out there.

Anyone that has one should do the inspection, saves all that rust dust grinding on your teeth.....????............????

I was doing a bit of fact checking today and discovered that all production of Halogen bulbs in both the US and EU is slated to be closed down next year.  Apparently, it's all part of an environmental agreement to eliminate all incandescent light bulbs from the planet.

I've never yet had to replace a bulb in a halogen oven but maybe I'd better buy a few for future use as I do rely on it.

Which was why I bought one of those first - negative was small size and it ceased operation within a couple weeks.  Find plate type fine once get used to using - fork for most things - scoop for fries and such.  Also easier to use with no twisting to lock basket required (in 80's can be an issue).

You are obviously not Australian, pies there are served piping hot.

I tried a cold pork pie once, British delicacy. Disgusting.

Good thinking.

IME the best pies I have ever eaten came from Bertoldo's Bakery in Griffith, New South Wales. Their steak and onion or steak and mushroom pies were culinary masterpieces.
