Many of us ex-pats have been travelling nomads for some time, so wherever we settle is our home from home.

Often people would say to me Lucky You…. living in the land of smiles. 

As is well known, Thailand attracts many retirees from Europe and Australia, and it is not uncommon to see a doddery old expat drinking with a beautiful 25-year-old Thai girl.

I think this joke sums it up very well.

Bob, an extremely wealthy 70-year-old widower, shows up at the Country Club with a 25-year-old knockout on his arm. His golfing buddies can’t believe it.  When she sashays off to the powder room, the boys rush over to get the lowdown. 

“Where did you find the girlfriend?” 

“Brittany’s not my girlfriend.  She’s, my wife. “

His friends are flabbergasted! 

“Then how did you persuade her to marry you? 

” Simple,” Bob confesses. “Lied about my age.” 

What, you told her you were only 50?” 

“Hell, no!  I told her I was 95.”

Thai women want to marry a Farang

I must admit it took me a while to understand the structure of Thai family life. 

Most of the population are poor farmers living in the north of Thailand. 

Families are very close, often with everyone working, eating, and even sharing the same bedroom.

Unfortunately, girls go out with the young men from their village, and at an early age often get pregnant.

In most cases the men are more interested in drinking, taking drugs or gambling, so there are hundreds of young single mums left at home.

With no support from the father of the child, often their mother or even grandmother will look after the baby, while the girl travels south to earn money to send back home. 

What they can earn in the north is a fraction of what they can earn in the south.

With little education, some end up working in factories, some become caddies at golf clubs, but many see the bright lights and go to work in bars.

When I first arrived in Bangkok, I did find it strange that an attractive girl was walking down the road holding hands with an older ex-pat. 

Holding hands by the way is saying to other girls, he is mine, stay away!

Many guys retire with a reasonable amount of life savings, so this attention from young females is unusual and sometimes flattering. 

They start to get into a routine of sitting in bars drinking beer all day and of course meeting loads of friendly young females.

Many end up buying or building homes up north, and even moving to live with their Thai wives and the Thai family.

Sometimes it works, but more often you hear about Bill from Sculthorpe who has lost all his life savings, when the wife leaves him, and the family keep the house he paid for and built.

Still, many of my friends have met and live in Bangkok or Pattaya with their Thai girlfriends, have started a family, and are very happy.

To an outsider, it must look very strange, but that is the norm in Thailand, and what guy anywhere does not like a pretty girl? 

You would certainly get a few envious stares when you go back home on holiday and walk down your local high street with your 25-year-old Thai wife in tow.

For the beginner it's hard. Many look similar. So the number definitely helps to avoid mistakes.

It's a fun thing to see with all those live webcam streams, a few on Samui for example. You can often see how their faces and body language really works out, right after the guy does not look at her or when she turns around / talks to friends.

 

Same thing I always love to watch people from bars in real life too. I have to say, first I didn't like to see it, then I adjusted but the longer I live here, the more I see how disgusted (and disgusting) both of them usually are. 

 

I sometimes feel sorry for the guys, who do not seem to notice at all, how their beloved wife behaves when they go to the toilet, look away etc. That is even often when they are of the same age tho, just the majority of all couples here I see.

The exceptions there are, beautiful relationships sure, but very few (lasting ones).

I don't bother to linger around with those who are like that, except for short time. Wouldn't settle for half a relationship either, anyone with a bit gut feeling and proper farmer logic would know when this is the case.

However, few people have proper gut feeling and farmer logic, specially nowadays. Of course many of the old guys are aware but do not care, they know they pay for services. That is fine right, nothing personal just business.

 

Would not claim it is limited to bar girls either, many other girls with normal jobs are exactly the same. The only difference might be they do not request money per time, day or month, but they still cost it regardless over time.

 

Sure, we could all settle for this hard working 6 day a week office type of girl, who is boring as <deleted>, and never has free time to do anything. Sure she will be loyal.

Dated stereotypes and hackneyed clichés too numerous to mention. Interacting with bar girls does not make one an authority on village life. These days most foreign men and Thai women in relationships are more savvy and realistic than the article suggests. Couples with extreme disparities in age are also far less common than in years past.

 

May I suggest an upcoming article topic: 40-50 year old digital nomads discovering that their dreams of supporting themselves by becoming a travel blogger or vlogger may not have been very realistic.

Her Thai boyfriend left her about 5 years ago and left her with a kid to support with no financial help from him and some debts she had co-signed with him which he has never helped pay.

I think most of us went through the candy shop phase when we first came here, 50 odd year old, knocking around with the 20 year old fit slim women. I certainly enjoyed it for many years.

 

But then some sort of reality takes hold for most of us. That 20 year old is not going to be pushing you in your wheelchair or wiping your bum in old age ! 

 

We mostly find suitable partners - yes, after the candy shop - that are nearer to our own age and not 40 years younger. 

 

We all fall apart in old age, going through it on your own and your 20 year old g/f watching it cannot be fun. I'm 58 now, the wife 44, we are slowly falling apart, and it's comforting to know we are falling apart together. I do not feel sad about the odd back pain, grey hair loss or lost tooth, etc, when it's happening to the wife beside me. 

 

I also know the difference now between a loving wife with that will be there to the end, as opposed to a loving g/f that I have nothing in common with that will be there until the money runs out

The woman in the file photo is as scary as the man. The first photo shows a man with a pub girl. These photos do not follow the narrative!

 

Men that marry women and especially poor ones from issarn are often bound for problems. Make that a poor woman under 25-30 and double that. The same with poor, lazy family and that's some serious pressure against you and your marriage.

 

Half your age plus eight has been a good rule of thumb.

 

Id say no more than fifteen years younger unless it's a purely financial transaction. Visa + sex + chores = care + money.

 

If a marriage is going to succeed the couple nerds to have things they enjoy doing together. Must be fine with each other's company long term. The man needs to remain entirely in control and in control of his finances. No kids unless you want one. No houses most certainly.

 

I love my wife. She's not a glamour girl but still looks good at 46 with a bit of makeup weighing in at 42kg. I see younger guys in BKK with hotter women but they are either rentals or gold diggers looking to set the hook. Most of all we share common interests and generally speaking life goals.

 

Married / together 12 years. I'd not do it again at 65. But the question is who will care for you when your health deteriorates?

 

Everyone ages I think we need to remember that. Look at that one old geezer in the photo. I bet he's dead now. When your this old do you need love and care or eye candy (that can be had here for less than b1000)?

 

You don't gain anything here by properly marrying here save for a visa at 400k. It will give your wife peace of mind assuming you have some assets to leave her.

 

Another stupid article. Maybe ramp up for the prospective high season as punters file in country.

Here's a tip for noobs. Asian people do not display outward signs of affection. If your date is holding hands and especially kissing or anything remotely like that - she's sinking the hook in you.

 

Another hot tip: don't do this in public as you'll look like a dope being taken for a ride. It's already obviously you're paying her by hour. Don't advertise how desperate you are for affection

You may get envious stares by other lonely men, but you'll also get stares of disgust from many who know the only reason she's with you. And if you show up to family functions with a girl who is younger than your own kids, the family will think you're a pervert. 

So there is that. If you don't care what people think then you have nothing to worry about. The younger she is the more compounded it will be. 

At some point too, she might get bored and leave you for a younger man deciding that all the money in the world isn't worth staying with an old fart with one foot in the grave.. And then you find yourself stuck at 75 taking care of the 2 year old you fathered. I've seen it happen.
