I more than very often make a special request when ordering food and the worst I ever get is a slight look of confusion (especially when ordering fried cashew nuts, without the cashew nuts...) On the other hand I am quite happy to socialise with thousands of them for 25 years at over 1200 Thai concerts, where I have almost always been the only foreigner present, so your impression is wrong. That's one of their functions not just as an elbow rest for lonesome drinkers. Perhaps you can't afford to eat at decent restaurants. He told me he spent every night up at the pub drinking after work and never ate. He said doctors told him that was the main problem, not eating.
