Has nothing to do with VPN, some actually live abroad and some might do that to specifically find a local farang there. Up to each person, so there is no black-white answer to that.

To add on a bonus tip, nowadays it shows ''populair users'' which you can't click on if you are not a paying member. But you can just enter thaifriendly.com/username to still access and message them.
