Popular Post webfact
by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - Newer subvariants of COVID-19 continue to emerge as BA.5 remains the predominant strain in Thailand. Health authorities said the general public should not worry about the new subvariants, as they do not seem to be more virulent or transmissible than their predecessors. The Department of Medical Sciences (DMSC) has provided an update on the current COVID-19 variant monitoring in Thailand, with 9 cases caused by BA.2.75 and its sub-lineages detected in Thailand so far. Dr. Supakit Sirilak, Director General of the DMSC, said the department has identified the variants from 359 samples in the last week, from which 5 cases were found to be caused by the BA.2.75 subvariant, while the majority or 333 cases belonged to the BA.4 and BA.5 group. The DMSC chief said additional mutations are found in the new sub-lineages of BA.2.75, such as BA.2.75.2. Further monitoring is still needed to determine whether these new mutations affect the transmissibility or severity of the disease. Health authorities in Thailand have detected and reported the cases of BA.2.75.1, BA.2.75.2, and BA.2.75.3, which are offsprings of the BA.2.75 subvariant, to the GISAID database. Most patients developed mild symptoms, and have been discharged from the hospital. Dr. Supakit said the department has been working collectively with scientists around the world to monitor the virus to focus on any signs of concerns. He reassured the general public that the department is capable of detecting new changes in the virus, asking them not to panic over information posted on social media. Popular Post JonnyF
Covid is old news. I was in the UK last week for a holiday and there were no masks, no talk of Covid, no concerns of catching it, life back to normal. Coming back to Thailand and having to mask up was a real pain. It feels like they're about a year behind and they look quite foolish to be honest having spent a week over there. It seems they just can't let it go. 12 2

Popular Post soi3eddie
When a government tells the public "not to panic" they know what they are doing and shaping anxieties further to control the populace into compliance of their rules. Here currently in the UK there is hardly ever any mention of Covid. Only news is invitations for over 65's to register and get theit FIFTH vaccination. My mum is getting hers on Saturday.

Popular Post spidermike007
As the numbers seem to continue to drop, covid would appear to be less and less of a worry. Quite refreshing to hear an official who is not engaging in overly panicked announcements.

Popular Post swm59nj
This version of Moderna given here is an older version. The newer version given in the USA came out a few weeks ago. The newest version directly protects against the latest variants and Omicron. Until I get the newest version I will still wear a mask. Even though some people with an 18th century philosophy of medicine will condemn the mask wearing. 2 2

With all due respect to the Thai's, given their nature to conform they don't seem to know how to break the cycle where if they take the mask off it's ONLY them now, standing alone against a sea of masked faces. It's just not in the spirit of the people here to go against the tide like that. Good luck to them I hope they can get out of this sooner than later. ???? 3

Willy Wombat
Even the useless World Health Organisation has come out and basically said that it's over. But not in Thailand and other Asian countries where they're stuck in 2020 1
Popular Post SpanishExpat
As long as all those clowns keep wearing their mask on tv (which was ridiculous from the beginning anyway), the public (at least thai people) won’t change their mind.

I was in the same situation like you (summer holidays in Europe, enjoying normal life and back last week) not willing to wear a mask anymore, expect on public transportation or in super crowded places. Couldn’t care less what locals think of me as „dirty farang“ or whatever. They can happily continue to wear their mask forever while walking alone on the street, but also respect my personal decision. No, the Thais, if anything, are great rule breakers. But they are more inclined to do what is good for the group, rather than the Western self centered approach. They are not standing alone, that is nonsense, other countries still retain mask wearing... . Don't let it worry you....

Actually, its a fact that swimming against the stream is simply not being encouraged in the thai society. Same as thinking out of the box or critical thinking in general. Thats why the Elite can stay Elite in this country. True, that Thailand is not the only country left with the mask. However, I am quite sure, if the leaders would officially stop wearing masks and announce that publicly, the mask situation would change in a few days to max 2 weeks. But with the current "up to you" situation they just follow the leaders. Edited September 15, 2022 by SpanishExpat 1

Thais and no doubt people of other Asian nations will probably wear a mask until the day they die - and then in some cases it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the body is taken to the temple still masked up. 1

I can only think of Govt buildings and immigration at the airport. I never wear a mask anywhere in Bangkok. Not the streets, BTS, malls, restaurants, taxi, anywhere.

Paradise Pete
It's not over, especially for the old farts (and I know I'm not the only one on here). If you catch it and recover it turns out you've still significantly increased your chances of dementia. Risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease increases by 50-80% in older adults who caught COVID-19 https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/09/220913140850.htm Edited September 15, 2022 by Paradise Pete
