Pattaya-In what may be a dry run for upcoming major events like Loy Krathong, the fireworks festival, Christmas, and New Year’s, Pattaya has been busy so far on day two going into the four day holiday weekend.

The extended weekend is due to government holidays given as part of the memorial ceremonies for His Royal Majesty Rama IX who sadly passed six year ago.

As a result, domestic tourists have poured into Pattaya and so far the weather has been favorable, bringing many to local beaches and according to Pattaya officials roughly 8,000 people a day so far to Koh Larn.

Tourist areas like Walking Street and LK metro have been busy as well with many foreign tourists also enjoying the holiday weekend.

Convoys of buses pouring in to see the disappearing beach.

More like convoys of buses pouring in to find no roads to drive on since road work all over the city.

I hope they enjoy our half deconstructed road networks.....both Sukhumvit and The Railway Line Bypass have plenty work on them to keep you amused...

And Threppasit Road!

T21 was very busy yesterday when I was there with my partner and some of his Thai relatives.  (Yes, they come from Bangkok and want to go to our T21.)   Traffic was bad in the areas we were at.  So, bad now, what's it going to be like when tourism gets really going again, with many more tourists and tour buses than we have now.

With the ridiculous 2am closing time now in force, there's not much of enjoying for tourists to do.

They seem to manage just fine, and are up in time for a nice fry up.

Indeed . There are way too many Thais and their cars in Pattaya driving around in circles all day. And counting. Don't they have malls in Bangkok? What happened to Bang Saen beach for Thais on weekends? All these parking garages and the Beach Rd parking project are for Thais alone. And with the narrow bottle neck roads it's only going to get more jammed up.

More city parking garages need to be built and parking needs to be eliminated on the major roads, instantly creating more lanes of traffic with no construction needed, starting with Beach Road and North Pattaya Road.  If that's too radical for now, a beginning could be made by at least eliminating the parking near major road turns.

For example, two lanes of traffic turn right onto Pattaya Tai from Sukumvit with the right turn signal there, only to find one lane of traffic and a parking lane.  So, the two turning lanes have to merge into one, resulting in delays and fewer cars getting through the signal.  A mess.

With fewer cars getting through the signal, the turning lanes on Sukumvit back up, which results in drivers getting frustrated so they queue to turn in the thru lane on Sukumvit, creating a third turning lane and dangerously blocking the thru lane.  So, now you have three lanes of traffic turning right and trying to merge into one lane--an even bigger mess.

If the parking by the turn, which only handles a few cars anyway, was eliminated up to the Big C entrance--and enforced--many more cars could get through the turn cycle more smoothly and they would have a fairly long distance to merge into the one traffic lane after the Big C entrance.  This isn't rocket science.  There are examples like this all over the city; little changes that could easily be made that would help a lot.

Will the Thais keep coming to Pattaya in such big numbers once the Chinese are back in full force? I would say not; there was a lot of anti-Chinese narrative around before Covid. Also, some popular pre-Covid holiday destinations for Thais are opening up, Japan for example.
