Nice apartment.   Great security, quiet room, hot water, nice bed, Air Con is fine, TV updated, blah, blah, blah, blah.................

Every morning I get to hear some guy (maybe in a nearby house, maybe on the 2nd floor, who knows) COUGH for at least 30-minutes as if his lungs will come out of his mouth.   yea, that smoker's cough of death......  I have my balcony open, windows open, I'm in a corner unit, and I'm not closing my windows to not hear him.   It's EVERY morning.   I don't really care, I can move month-to-month and that option let's me deal with it.   Many days I'm gone before he starts his death coughing, but not every day.

Also, last night at 2 a.m. the insane number of dogs woke me up despite my 1000000 kg of wax in my ears (ear plugs).

Also, a guy smokes maybe 30 meters away in the soi....................once a day I get to smell his smoke.

There used to be a kid with some whistle thing I would hear over and over and over......

Birds are fine.

Oh yea, they (neighbors) also built a house 10 meters from my window last month.   Only a few days of bang, bang, bang, bang.....There is plenty of open spaces where more houses can be built.  I'm sure they will be, eventually.

AT the absolute WORST, I'll be here like 5 more months.   Corner units are definitely the coldest.

Anyhow, IF................. IF I bought a place and all this stuff was going on, I think I would go crazy.

but renting.................ah, that's fine, it's LOS.

Yea, a few times I got to hear babies crying in the nearby house for hours..............that's fine.   In another city, a child would ride his bike and keep pressing some super loud alarm bell thing on his handlebars all day........wow, that was super loud and drove me crazy.    The first few hundred times are fine...............lol.................and I'll never complain in-person, but it really was deafening and closing the windows didn't help there.

a nice morning "rant"......it's not really a rant, since I'm not really upset.   Happy I was smart enough to rent.

Oh yea, twice a week I get the karaoke place a few streets down......but it's usually from like 8 to 11 p.m., so I almost forgot about that.

You should move to Central Pattaya. Here is so much bar noise every night that you will not get disturbed by other noise ????????????

I rented for the first two years I lived here but then I decided it was a waste of money so I bought a condo. The condo was on the 16th floor so I wasn't worried about any of the things mentioned in the OP plus I was able to personalize my accommodation and decorate the way I wanted. This was back in early 2000's, when I sold after five years of ownership I got all my money back plus a small profit. The best part was avoided paying rent for 5 years, the absolute bestest best part was I made over 30% on the exchange rate which was where the real profit was. The moral of the story is that it doesn't matter where you rent or buy you can still make good a <deleted> choices.

Noise is the number one thing I hate about living in Thailand.  We had to actually move from our dream house that we build, due to the unbearable loud noise of 2 establishments either side of us that were built a couple of years after our house.

I nearly had a nervous breakdown after random days of being jolted awake at 4 or 5 am several days a week for over a year. The Ear splitting loud music and banging deep base beats would go on and off randomly all day .

And just as I though I had stopped it would come back on.  Problem was idiot drunk or drugged up guy on one side with loud speakers, and on the other side a neighbour who tried to drown out the noise with their own...both people cranking up the volume.

Our next house we had peace for several years before everyone decided to start knocking down their old houses and build new ones. 2 years of construction work so far, lorries, diggers, chainsaws, cutting up steal, etc...7 days a week from 6 or 7 am till late into the night....

Both places were in rural CM in small villages.  On top of all that was the normal noise of base music late into the night from various parties, the music and voice over the village head speakers, the fireworks from funerals, the barking, screaming and bowling of the growing number of street dogs, and the kids racing on noisy motor bikes, and the neighbour opening a restaurant with loud TV and music in her garden adjoining our garden wall next to our living room.  All that came with huge piles of smelly big bags dumped outside our gate, which would end up getting ripped open by the pack of street dogs.

Then every year the air pollution season starts to boot.

I loved it here and have lived here full time nearly 20 years..  but my tolerance to the noise, general lack of consideration to neighbours, dog bites, and pollution has reached its limit.  We are selling our home and moving back to Europe.

Yes, I agree.

But sometimes you can make all the right choices and end up with random crazy noisy neighbours or someone opening a bar or restaurant near you.  It's a gamble.

Been in my house for 8 years, the only noise is birds tweeting.

Sometimes I hear a buffalo in the field behind.

The absolute FUNNIEST was a falang who rented in a big city but had some really Thai-style houses below him with those metal roofs and horrible walls...

He could literally hear the family next store go to the bathroom, clear as day.   Could hear everything.    That is absolutely crazy................plop, plop............. OMG

yea, you never know.

In America, not the quietest place but when your house value increases by 300k, you seem to forget the bad times.

  • Author

Couple American scenarios I don't THINK can happen in Thailand.....Maybe it can in BKK, doubtful.

America:  Either me or a friend, no need to give all the details.

House bought for 150k.  sold for 150k. now 700k

bought for 35k.  sold for 250k.  now 500k

bought for 280k.  sold for 380.  now 800k

bought for 300k  now 650k.  not sold...............and many others in this situation

bought for 200k  sold for 200k.  now 700k.

When you "miss" the big money and then rent................well, then renting is the worst of the worst.

But in LOS, renting just seems like the right way.

Yes, why I've always built in rural area, and away from others & loud speakers.

The way you describe it, it seems you will always hear something that annoys you. And if you move likely something else will annoy you. So what do you do if you just moved in and a month later you hear annoying noise? Do you move out and leave 2 months deposit? Or do you wait 11 months and move then?

More noisy inside during activities with your young(er) GF.

Don't worry it will eventually evolve/devolve into that, just give it time.
