Mushroom picker trampled to death by wild elephant in Kanchanaburi

The chief of the Salak Phra forest reserve in Kanchanaburi in western Thailand revealed yesterday evening that a man had been killed by a wild elephant.

 

Phaitoon Inttharabutr said that the man was a 50 year old Kanchanaburi local called Buakhao Srikaew. 

He had been trampled in Moo 5 of Tha Kradan sub-district.

 

Late afternoon it had been impossible to bring out the body that was found deep in the forest in an area inhabited by a herd of 20 elephants, reported Thai Rath.

 

Later Srisawat police and medical teams reached the area and found the victim with his lower garment removed.

 

His intestines had spilled out and there was further damage to his legs. 

 

Elephant footprints were found.

 

It is believed that Buakhao was out picking wild mushrooms and had followed the path next to a electrified fence before he came up against the elephant that stamped on him.

It seems to be a fact, that when the grim reaper is ready for you to exit this lifetime, there is no getting away from him, whether you are in the relative safety of your home, or out picking mushrooms. Man is no match for the power of an elephant. He was in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Some could argue alot of "accidents" are exactly that.

Picking mushrooms in Thailand is dodgy. If the authorities don't get you, the wild life will.

His chances to avoid ' the grim reaper ' would have been considerably higher , would he not have gone to pick up mushrooms in a wildlife reserve inhabited by a hoard of elephants .

He died of being stupid and greedy .

I agree its preventable and the elephants are not to blame. But to call someone greedy without knowing their situation is a bit over the top. Usually people like this are dirt poor and do this to make some extra money. Its a bad decision on his part but to call him greedy is over the top.

What took him there ? He wanted to collect mushrooms . He ( probably ) knew that this was in a wildlife reserve with wild elephants in it . So , he took a considerable risk , ( and died of it ) , for being able to collect more mushrooms ... I call this greedy . Would he not have been able to find his mushrooms somewhere else , in a not protected zone ? That would have been much less dangerous .

But the greed for having more made him take the risk and he died of it . Just stay out of wildlife reserves . They are there for the wildlife , and not for the people .

There is a difference between greed and trying to scrape by a living. Greed is totally different and you have no proof the guy had other means of surviing. Not all people have enough money to survive. I would say greedy if he had good income and then went for even more. IMHO this guy was just trying to survive and made stupid decision.  That is as far as I go.

 

And yes wildlife reserves are for wildlife, when you go there its at your own risk and the elephants did not do anything wrong. But to attach greed without knowing the guys personal circumstances is just insulting.
