Report Vietnam Intensifies Crackdown on Smuggling and Counterfeiting
Picture courtesy of Vietnam News Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has issued an official dispatch urging intensified efforts to tackle smuggling, trade fraud, and counterfeit goods, along with violations of intellectual property rights. This move reinforces the country's commitment to eliminating these illicit activities without any exceptions or protected zones. The directive comes as part of a continuation of previous efforts, including the implementation of Directive No 13/CT-TTg and Official Dispatches No 65/CD-TTg and No 72/CD-TTg. These measures were aimed at strengthening the fight against fraud, resulting in the detection and handling of significant violations involving counterfeit milk, medicine, food, and dietary supplements, as well as the suppression of counterfeit trading of well-known brands. However, the latest assessments reveal that certain localities lag in the campaign's execution, lacking comprehensive understanding and sufficient monitoring. Smuggling and intellectual property infringements persist as complex challenges in some regions, with coordination among governmental bodies sometimes falling short. Prime Minister Chính has tasked Deputy Prime Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn, who leads the National Steering Committee for fighting such crimes, with directing all relevant authorities to implement stronger measures during the peak crackdown month, initiated on May 15. This includes swiftly addressing violations and enforcing strict discipline against officials showing signs of corruption or misconduct, in line with the principles of addressing one incident to warn entire sectors. Media agencies have also been urged to amplify awareness of the dangers posed by counterfeit goods, showcasing effective anti-fraud practices and condemning negative behaviours. By doing so, the government hopes to bolster the nationwide campaign's impact, striving for a more robust response against smuggling and trade fraud. These concentrated efforts underscore Vietnam's resolve to combat fraudulent activities and protect both consumers and legitimate businesses, enhancing the integrity of the market and upholding intellectual property rights.
