Are you sometimes lured by the mystique of the Tattoo? Can you take the pain?

I got my mid-sized tattoo on my upper back about 15 years ago and still like it. I'd like another couple on the shoulders but I've got more important things to be spending my money on. Regarding pain, for about 2 hours or so it was nothing, I mean nothing. As I was approaching the 4th hour mark though it became very painful. It could have been due to the time or that it was filling (more needles) on/around the spine.

Wealthy are not immune to being stupid or scribbling pointless tattoos over themselves to impress nobody.

As I keep them covered when out and about and while working, and when I was the CEO of my own company, then how would you ever know I was tattooed.  So would that repulse you and would you vomit all over yourself after a few years of knowing me when you found out I was tattooed.  It is pretty sad to see that people in this world take a view and cut people out of there lives just on seeing something without getting to actually see the person or know the person for who they are.  I once had a client who was full body tattooed, and he came to me as a client after he had been judged by others in my profession to be nothing more than a low-life, and no one would take on his business.  The man was a millionaire and did not care what others thought of him and used it to his advantage. So a tattoo in your view is designed by the wearer to impress someone,.....that is laughable.  As I said my tattoos stay covered up they are for me as they mean something to me and were never inked to impress others or gain attention.  Your view is tainted my man.

Depends on how the tattoo adds to their overall beauty, sure some are tasteless but many are done very tastefully, and enhanced the beauty.

Far too many cases of judging a book by it's cover. Who really cares what the nay sayers think, certainly not me. The tats I have, have specific meaning to me and I don't fall into any of the categories listed earlier by a very narrow minded poster. I grew up in an era when having a tattoo was frowned upon by the oldies of the time. I eventually woke up to the fact that I didn't have to please others in this life, just myself. I got my first tattoo at age 60. I now have 10. All those posters with such narrow minded opinions about tats should keep your negativity to yourselves as none of you have the right to say whether it is wrong to have tattoos. Learn to accept people for who they are, not what their appearance is.

So a person whose religion is Buddhism, even thought they may be white, is ridiculous in your view.  Having spent time as a Monk myself I find your view very insulting.

At one time during my life a tat was viewed as counter-culture and non-conformity.
Now it's the quintessential sign of conformity by those seeking acceptance within their generational peer group.

Yep, but I've no interest in proving that I need to be a member of anyone's club by branding myself to gain acceptance.

Having been a Theravadan monk, I find Sak Yant and other 'protection' tats to be in the realm of superstition that have absolutely nothing to do with Theravada Buddhism.  The fact that monks make money by promoting that superstitious clap-trap is even worse.  That superstitious behavior promoted by some 'monks' discounts and demeans the religion as a whole..

Friend of mine had his name in Chinese writing on his arm, it actually said 'chicken fried rice and a portion of chips'.

No not really, got drunk and had my hair dyed once but a permanent body marking is a step too far. No idea what i would have and my opinions views change over the years.

 

I find them a good marker for the type of person that has them for eg any lady with an inspirational quote, is generally best left alone......

 

If your ever in Hua hin and meet lady with 'love me for who i am' on her arm.....then run a mile!

 

Generally in life what ever people tend to project is the actual opposite of their true thoughts.

I generally refrain from stating such opinions, as I do not want to violate any Forum rule, but this sort of thing has always rubbed me the wrong way.

 

It is a component of all faiths (I am a 100% non-believer in any deity/deities/team of deities/competing teams of deities/etc.). "Believers" add things to what the guy who invented the faith first put down. Most faiths at the wholesale level aren't so bad, though why anyone needs them is beyond me. If the way to live a moral life isn't patently obvious to anyone reaching adulthood, then I think the person is flawed. At the retail level, however, every faith is just a layer of butter spread atop the older pagan beliefs or primitive superstitions that are much more strongly held.

 

In Myanmar it is Moslems who catch birds, then sell them to Buddhists, who release them and ostensibly gain merit. That is kind of ecumenical capitalism which I might applaud, but it's pure abject superstition at its core. I also do not think there is a 'holy person' who ever lived who could teach me a goddamn thing. I can surmise what it takes to be good. Holy people seem to inherently know that, which is why they resort to manufacturing and then teaching BS and nonsense, as it keeps them employed.

 

Most faiths were invented when life pretty much sucked. They worked to give people hope or keep them in line. Later faiths (mormonism, scientology) are just profit-making cults. Life for many people is pretty great now, so the false promises of most faiths (eternal boredom, getting off the wheel) are no longer attractive, so faith is dying away.

There are Theravadin Monks and Buddhist Monks here in Thailand along with many other classifications of Theravadin Monks like the Forest Monks and so on.  Best you do some more research on Theravadin Monks and Tattoo's and the origin.

Well when I had the Sak Yant Gao Yord tattooed at the top of my back by a highly respected monk tattooist outside of Chiang Mai…. Yes, it was painful….perhaps because he is tattooing you right over your backbone vertebra. He was using Khem Sak…. A long brass or bronze rod with a double pointed spike in it.  It was all Thais there.  I was the only Farang. There with my Thai friends. 
  If I had known how painful it was going to be, I never would have started. First time I had a tattoo in my life, at age 61. 
   Crazy thing is….a few days later I wanted more.  Ended up with nine Sak Yant tattoos from the monk… with the prayers and blessings and sprinkling …..  I am a Buddhist also.  Having gone for Refuge in the Triple Gem and taken the Five Precepts with the head abbot and monks at a Khmer Krom Theravada Temple.
