'Not a repudiation': Joe Biden holds off red wave, gets unexpected boost from midterm election

Kevin McCarthy almost has the reins of a House majority. Can he hold on?

As the minority leader inches closer to taking the speaker’s gavel, the Republican leader will have to navigate a fractious conference with a likely slim majority

...

The House majority remains unknown as of Wednesday evening as numerous races remain close in districts Republicans believed they would easily win.

House Republicans, to be sure, are largely still expected to win the majority. But some are frantic over what appears to be a razor-thin victory as they stare down what many privately say is the impossible task of governing an ideologically fractious conference with slim margins.

Here's where things stand with the balance of power in the Senate and the House

With the day after the election wrapping up, control of Congress remains undetermined.

Republicans hold 49 seats in the Senate, while the Democrats have 48. Two states are uncalled and Georgia's Senate seat will be decided by a December runoff election.

In the House, it could be days until a full picture emerges as votes are still being counted in states like California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona.

...exit polls by Edison Research...

"A third of voters said their House vote was intended to send a message to oppose Biden; 1 in 5 said it was intended to support him. Nearly half of voters said Biden's policies were "hurting" the country; only a third said they were "helping."

Even so, Biden had a more positive standing than Trump – or, put another way, a less negative one. Biden's favorable-unfavorable rating was 41%-56%, 15 points underwater. Trump's rating was 39%-58%, 19 points underwater."

Anti-Trump vote and Dobbs abortion ruling boost Democrats in 2022 election

Many Democrats and independents voted partly to show their disapproval of former President Donald Trump, exit polls show.

They were also dismayed by the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and send the issue of abortion rights back to the states.

These issues drove unusually strong Democratic turnout in a midterm election and, in a big surprise, gave Democrats a slight edge among independents.

Trump not a happy camper infuriated with the results and blaming everyone except himself. Even Sean Hannity was not spared in his blame game. Looks like he is sticking around for the duration and dashing GOP chances in 2024. Maybe Trump is Dem’s Trojan horse.

That's the kind of ignorance that comes from watching Fox News.

Inflation is a global problem caused by supply chain issues.  Biden is doing what he can to bring supply chains closer to or inside the US, but that is a project that takes years.  In the meantime he has no more power over inflation than any other national leader.

There was no energy crisis 2 years ago because demand was much lower.  Oil producers stopped the fracking because costs were exceeding price.  They won't invest the money to restart until they are confidant long term prices will justify the expense.

The supply chain issues were caused by an economic rebound post-Covid and are now largely caused by China's flawed Covid policies.  What do you suggest Biden do about that?

That's the kind of ignorance that comes from watching CNBC.

Inflation and energy crisis are global issues. There is no domestic shortage of energy and the U.S. was still a net exporter in 2021 and 2022.

As concerns inflation, it is also global issue.. Actually, The U.S. is faring better than the OECD average.

If there is no domestic shortage why is Biden emptying the SPR??

It is not particularly aimed at the domestic market.

That you asked that question shows that you don't know that petroleum prices are set in the global market. Less product in the market means higher prices.

I think the chart did all the explain I need. It certainly falsified your claim that Covid deficit was 5 trillion in 2020

Yes I erred and looked at the wrong chart (spending/debt).

However, if you look at your own (deficit) chart the deficit was not 5 trillion in 2020 but 3.13T.

On the same chart the deficit was 2.77 trillion in 2021. That is not halving the deficit.

DeSantis is all about noise and stunts paid for by taxpayers, along with the inevitable lawsuits.  Trump's base will love him.

Those noises and stunts sound just like Biden.

Various different sources are reporting the republican senate tally at 49 and others at 48, as kindly posted by members on the thread.  Can anyone reconcile the discrepancy as I can't see to find out where it is.

biden claimed to halve the deficit ifor 2022. As for the 5 trillion, that was your claim for 2020.

The deficit halved from 21 to 22. Not from when Biden got in the WH. I explained the 5T already. There is less spending on Covid and related costs in any case.

And may it grow and fester.

This is going to be good. ????

Trump:

"Now that the Election in Florida is over, and everything went quite well, shouldn’t it be said that in 2020, I got 1.1 Million more votes in Florida than Ron D got this year, 5.7 Million to 4.6 Million? Just asking?,” he asked."

And

"If he runs, he runs,” Trump said, according to the Wall Street Journal. If DeSantis chooses to run, however, Trump could disclose “things about him that won’t be very flattering,” he warned. “I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife, who is really running his campaign.” ????
