Nancy Pelosi, who has led Democrats in the US House of Representatives for almost two decades, has announced she is standing down from the role.

The 82-year-old is the most powerful Democrat in Congress and the first woman to serve as speaker of the House.

She will continue to represent her California district in the lower chamber of Congress.

I wish her a happy retirement, but I think the BBC is wrong about Hakeem Jeffries taking over as leader. That would not be a logical choice seeing as he is a renowned election denier - something of a hot topic among democrats in recent times.

BBC claim "New York congressman Hakeem Jeffries is widely expected to take up the top Democratic leadership post in the House, which would make him the first black congressional leader in US history."

Yet from Mr Jeffries own Twitter account he said - which no democrat would put up with someone with an anti-democracy stance like that

Congratulations to Speaker Pelosi.

She did an AMAZING job leading her caucus effectively as the first female Speaker of the House. Her steady hand guided us through a tumultous time period.

Kevin McCarthy, assuming he can herd 218 cats - and many think he won't be able to muster the votes - will have big shoes to fill.

Her father was a Congessional Rep., and Mayor of Baltimore.

One of my favorite photos of her...

Actually McCarthy most likely will be herding 220 or 221 cats.

So she's finally gone, hurrah.

IMO politicians like her are the reason for imposing limits on time allowed in congress/ parliament/ etc.

You’ll have to explain what these imposed limits are.

While you look for them the rest of us can recall how it was Pelosi’s experience that enabled her to out wit (sulking) McCarthy.

Pelosi is a very clear example of precisely why experience matters.

And an even more amazing job of enriching herself through the highly suspect stock trades of her husband. I, for one, am glad she's gone. It's time to get rid of these octogenarians.

So, do you agree it's time to stop all stock trading by members of Congress?

If it doesn't include their close family relatives or using companies to shelter scrutiny there is not much point is there?

Sure, do you agree all members of Congress and their immediate families should be barred from stock trading? And all elected members should have to place all their assets in a blind trust?

Yes of course. I do not support corruption or insider trading in any way shape or form.

I (JerryMahoney) was always amused that then President Trump referred to then Speaker Ms. Pelosi as "Crazy Nancy" when almost everyone knows that he's a lot crazier than she is.

< As the interview continued, Pelosi gave the response she often gives to the president’s attacks on her, telling Cramer, “Anything the president says is a projection of his own insecurities.” >

ALL politicians, whatever gender or party they are. That includes local politicians as well, The lot of them. 3 terms sounds good to me. One as a newbie, one as someone that is beginning to know stuff, one as an opportunity to do the job the people pay them to do.

term limits sounds like a good idea until you think about who would gain power with limits: the lobbyists. No limits on their terms... newbies would be open to influence of them on how to "get things done".... as things are now lobbyists have huge input on the writing of bills. Congress members have to spend inordinate portion of time fund raising for re-election.

We would need campaign finance reform and restrictions on lobbying if term limits would have a chance of a positive outcome

That works for all sides.

What do you think the term limits should be?

IMHO there ought to be a maximum age limit of say 65 years old at the end of the term limit.

As usual, you make the accusation, now back it up with the links and the proof.

Yes, there are many that enriched themselves but I do not believe this thread is another rant on Trump thread? Let's try and stay focused on the topic at hand for once. The Pelosis famously made some incredible trades in companies such as nvidia before important price sensitive legislation was passed.

BTW this is the topic at hand and NOT enrichment by people.

Instead of banning trading, how about having ALL members of Congress (and immediate family( register all their trades with an independent auditor?  If they want to invest while in Washington, no problem, as long as they dont keep it secret.

IMHO it should apply to ALL politicians.

Agreed 100%. Three terms in the House, one in Senate, one as President.  Max age for last election campaign 69 years old.   That gives a potential of 16 years snout down in the trough in Sodom on the Potomac. That should be enough for any one person.

All this age and term-limit stuff might be more plausible if there were not such a thing as Article 1 of the US Constitution.

It's been all over the Internet. The stock trades of Paul Pelosi in advance of policy decisions by Congress even  motivated a bill to ban stock trading by congress people and their spouses (A vote was blocked by Pelosi).
