GOVERNMENT spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri stepped in to explain that Chinese President Xi Jinping did not shake hands with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha because he is avoiding doing so as part of strict Chinese Covid measures, Sanook.com said Friday afternoon (Nov. 18).

 

Chinese officials had added that Xi is also avoiding handing over gifts and is skipping small meetings at the Apec summit for this very reason.

 

The Thai online world is astir on this missed handshake with a video clip circulating showing Prayut extending his hand to Xi who walked ahead.

 

However the Chinese leader did shake hands with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida when they held a meeting on the sidelines of the Apec summit Thursday (Nov. 17).

Yes, I saw that Xi was speaking to Trudeau via a translator and giving a right 'talking to' for leaking the details of their previous meeting, but he shook his hand after the meeting.

 

This is a snub. Likely because Xi is scared like a child of COVID and of course Prayuth was recently in touch with Hun Sen so the risk would be elevated but I prefer to think it's a snub all the same ????

More likely is that he views Thailand as the tiny, significant and irrelevant nation that it is, with no influence on him, China or anywhere or anything else in the world.

Nothing to do with covid. He wouldn’t even have gone if that were the case. There is ALWAYS a reason why pooh does or doesn’t do something. It’s pathetic and yet extremely satisfying all the same.
