Appointment of Pateemoh Sadeeyamu, 57, as governor of southern Pattani province may help end conflict, believe observers

Thailand has appointed the first Muslim woman governor, a sign of “improvement of Muslim women in politics,” according to observers.

 

Pateemoh Sadeeyamu, 57, has been appointed as the new governor of southern Pattani province.

The Thai Cabinet approved the elevation on Tuesday.

 

With a career spanning almost 29 years at the Interior Ministry of the Buddhist-majority nation, she earlier served as deputy governor of Narathiwat province.

 

“This is a huge development. Being a Muslim and a woman holds many challenges in Thai politics,” Yasmin Sattar, vice dean for Academic, Research and Foreign Affairs at Prince of Songkla University, Pattani, told Anadolu Agency on Wednesday.

It would substantially more credible if the junta allowed these people to elect their own governor rather than be appointed by a cabal of old Buddhist men in Bangkok. 

A Muslim woman telling Muslim men what to do isn't what the Quran is about.

I wish her every success 

Good for her. I wish her well in containing the violence in the South and in reconciling Muslim and Buddhist factions.

I assume when you say Asia, you mean only South East, as in Malaysia, Indonesia etc. In which case, seeing where you are based I will defer to your local knowledge. But if you take Asia as a whole, that is a different ball game, even considering Indonesia to be the most populous Muslim nation....
