Female French tourists praised for cleaning up the beach at Samui - rewarded with coconut water!

Daily News Thai Caption: Most Impressive

 

Thailand's national media Daily News said that locals in Koh Samui in southern Thailand were most impressed after three French ladies collected trash blown off the sea onto the beach in Mae Nam.

 

Anong Villa resort owner Phumin Nakpetchphun alerted the media to the act of selflessness.

"I'm from Samui," he said, "and I was most impressed. It made me cry".

Though he admitted if it wasn't tossed in the sea in the first place it wouldn't need clearing up.

 

The tourists were similarly impressed after they were rewarded for their efforts with some fresh coconut water.

A kindness that was met with "wais" from the ladies.

 

Among their haul were plastic bottle, bottles containing engine oil, tonic drink bottles and other rubbish.

They said it was lovely down at the beach in Thailand with its clear water and they wanted to keep it that way.

 

They particularly loved Koh Samui and Koh Phangan and hoped their compatriots would also be visiting soon.

Further reward also came later Sunday when their national football team 'cleared up' at the World Cup in Qatar beating Poland 3-1, notes ASEAN NOW.

Every god damn island here is cleaned by foreigners/immigrants/tourists, look up trash hero thailand.

 

As always thais come for nothing but a photo and PR, how about use ur 2 bloody arms and pickup trash urself man...

I don't pick up other people's trash, that's ridiculous.  That's why I pay taxes.

"Why would they feel obligated to pick up other people's trash."... they didn't feel obligated. It's called doing a good deed and doing the right thing. All of us can learn something from them. Not to wait for someone else to act if you can get involved and help. Don't complain when it isn't picked up while you sit on your hands. If more people were like these ladies, the world would be a far better place. Good for them.

They did not feel OBLIGATED as that means required by law. Neither were they OBLIGED to do it as they didn't expect a reward. They did it because they WANTED to.

This isn't trash people throw away on the islands, this is mostly ocean trash from fishing boats, rivers etc. 

 

Much of the stuff is from Vietnam as they dump it in the Mekong at least in the Gulf of Thailand. 

 

Why Thais (or anyone else who earns money at the beach) should pick it up is quite simple, they run the coconut bars/beach bars/hotels at the beaches where where the trash is...

That reminds me of my visit to the Maldives many years ago. They collected all the garbage on the local island. And then they transported it with a boat to dump it far away into the sea - near some other island...

Seen plenty of farangs throwing trash on the ground, I've yet to see one picking someone else's trash up.

Now don't you scoff at a coconut water as a reward, this is Samui's form of the highest owner they can bestow on a foreigner who do the job of the municipality...

Huge compliments to these ladies. If the locals now realize that they live in a beautiful country that they can be proud of and the tourists (who have not had an education), both throw their rubbish away themselves ...... A small effort.

I'm on the eastern seaboard and in a few months the beach will be saturated in trash from sea as the tides change.  The locals selling food steps from the beach won't lift a finger to clean up the trash. The school does a beach cleanup now and then while the vendors just look on.

They mean that they come for the photo opp, praise the tourists and say how great the thing that they did was (while gaining face for themselves), but never actually make the effort themselves.  Which makes their praise, coconut water and photos seem slightly empty.

Probably those French female tourists were hoping for some romantic holiday on the beach with guys who line up to buy drinks for them. And then, probably after a few days, they discovered that all those guys are only interested in the local dusky girls.

I guess that was really frustrating for them. So they walked along the beach with some last hope that if they only search long enough, they will find a guy. But no, that never happened.

And then, instead of dying of boredom, they started to pick up the trash.

That was obviously a great idea. Win/win/win for everybody.

Good work. One of the reasons I left Samui, is the astonishing lack of pride, of most of the locals. Sometimes Thai people can learn through shame. These gals are shaming the locals. That is a good thing. Someone has to do it. The mayor of Samui has been amassing a fortune for a long time now, and he could have assembled beach clean up crews for 60,000 baht per month. That is drop in the bucket. But, he is too cheap, and has no vision or pride. Neither do most of the leading families on Samui, it would appear. 

 

Samui is a gorgeous island, once you get away from the Ring Road. But, some of the beaches need maintenance.

I wonder how many Thais, especially those in powerful positions, ever go to the beach or swim in the sea. As far as I know important Thais, you know those white Thais who would never voluntarily go into the sun, don't spend any time on the beach. So, they won't see the rubbish. And that is almost the same as if they rubbish doesn't exist. It's all a question of priorities...

A reasonably good point. However, the locals on Samui are well aware of the trash. And yet they choose to ignore it. And the mayor is largely to blame. So are the leading families on Samui. Shame on them for their extreme lack of pride. It is an easy and inexpensive thing to keep these beaches clean. And with the money they generate from tourism, the trash is a very sad indictment on the leadership on Samui. When I lived there, sometimes the island felt like a very old dishrag, which had been used several hundred too many times.

They come to the beach to hide in the shade under the trees sipping whiskey with soda. And, the ladies venture over to the sea wall where photos don't show the trash. The tide changes and reclaims some of the trash, after awhile the plastic disappears by the poor walking the beach to recycle. Somehow the Thais don't mind living amidst trash.

had the good fortune to visit and stay on samui in the early 1990s; beach bungalow, makeshift beach restaurants, long pristine beach, clean sea... as close to paradise as i've ever been. went back around 10 years ago, was horrified by the state of the place, it was completely unrecognisable from the wonderful place i previously visited. wish i'd never returned, at least my memories would be untainted.

Simply FALSE information, my THAI wife is a trash hero. Not all are Foreigners.
