This morning I woke up after a reasonable night’s sleep and felt quite nauseous. I turned over and promptly slept another 2 hours which is very unusual for me. The second time on waking I still felt nauseas (it seems to come in waves) and when I tried to get up I felt dizzy and extremely weak.

I finally made it downstairs and more or less collapsed on the sofa. I tried to eat but had no appetite – managed a few spoons of kow tom and a piece of fruit. I then lay there the whole day, drifting in and out of sleep.

Late afternoon I felt a bit better and manage a couple of slices of toast and some soup. But every time I try to get up I feel so weak and aching, and still dizzy. I now have a thumping headache and a fever – which I didn’t have this morning.

I know I should see a doctor but I just don’t trust those bastards, and I’m on so much medication for my heart and diabetes, that I reckon they’ll have no idea where to start. They’ll just rub their hands in glee when they see my Amex Platinum.

I haven’t had a drop of alcohol for over 5 months, and up to this morning have been feeling well and active.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

I would say its some sort of bug as I had something like that a few months ago it lasted 48 hours but if you are not feeling any better after 48 hours I would go see a doc. I know how you feel get well soon. :o

my wife has just recently recovered from very similar symptoms, is there any chance you may be pregnant too?

ow, ill health is no fun eh. If not gone in 24 hours, its best that you bite the bullet and go see the doc or go to a local hospital for a checkup. The doc will rely on you for info for a diagnosis, but the hospital can give you a blood test to check for a viral infection etc.

I really dont like docs and hospitals much either but, better to be safe than sorry.

Thank you so kindly for your advice.

I wish I knew what the he.ll you were talking about.

Why don't you run back to the General topics and make your mischief there?

I really don't understand where someone gets off making a joke at someone who is sick and seeking advice on a forum set up for that purpose.

But I guess I should have known better.

PS I'd like to meet you shoe shine friends - maybe they can pay my hospital bills.

Hi

Do your joints ache? Is there Dengue fever in your area?

Hope not but have to consider it.

Thanks EEk and Scotsman

Yes, I reckon I'll give it 48 hours and see. Right now the fever's getting worse, even though I'm shivering.

In any case I have some appointments at Bumrungrad on Monday, so I'll see if I can last out till then.

there is a lot of flu like bugs doing the rounds , coughing and head aches and just making you feel real run down

hope you get better soon

I know this is a stretch ..... but did you consider going to the Dr?

No matter what is posted here, this IS as you pointed out, an internet forum. A million questions leading to a million different diagnoses are possible! See a pro!

There's a bit of a bug going around these days, both me and my daughter caught it last week. Might just be that. Took the usual 2-3 days to get over it.

I use my usual remedies, tea with rum, paracetamol and as much sleep as I can press in.

Best of luck with it, hope you get over it quickly!

Yes, they do kind-of. Do you know any other symptoms?

I'm not aware of Dengue in this area, but I was up In Sa Kaeo on Wednesday night.

This infectious disease is manifested by a sudden onset of fever, with severe headache, muscle and joint pains (myalgias and arthralgias - severe pain gives it the name break-bone fever or bonecrusher disease) and rashes; the dengue rash is characteristically bright red petechia and usually appears first on the lower limbs and the chest - in some patients, it spreads to cover most of the body. There may also be gastritis with some combination of associated abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.

Some cases develop much milder symptoms, which can, when no rash is present, be misdiagnosed as a flu or other viral infection. Thus, travelers from tropical areas may inadvertently pass on dengue in their home countries, having not been properly diagnosed at the height of their illness. Patients with dengue can only pass on the infection through mosquitoes or blood products while they are still febrile.

The classic dengue fever lasts about six to seven days, with a smaller peak of fever at the trailing end of the fever (the so-called "biphasic pattern"). Clinically, the platelet count will drop until the patient's temperature is normal.

Cases of DHF also show higher fever, haemorrhagic phenomena, thrombocytopenia and haemoconcentration. A small proportion of cases lead to dengue shock syndrome (DSS) which has a high mortality rate.

...

It is very important to avoid Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. These drugs are often used to treat pain and fever, but in this case, they may actually aggravate the bleeding tendency associated with some of these infections. If dengue is suspected, patients should receive instead acetaminophen preparations to deal with these symptoms

Mobi, people get Dengue in Bangkok. They also get Typhoid fever in Bangkok. Given the fever is worsening, go to the nearest hospital. On weekends even some of the smaller hospitals have good doctors, as senior doctors from the Police General Hospital often work these hospitals on weekends.

Don't take chances. You only go around once.

Glad to hear your off to the hospital.

I few months back i had a terrible viral infection, was worried it was something more serious as i had been to Laos a short while before the onset. All was ok though, but have since developed subacute thyroiditis. Thing is to make sure that you look after yourself well after your infection too. I dont think i gave myself enough time to recover (got back on the treadmill etc) and that is maybe why i ended up with the thyroid problem.

Whatever it turns out to be, allow yourself good time to recover and then some. Take things easy. :o

I would be checking the dengue fever symptoms out very carefully as its been in the news (and here I think?), that there has been many cases recently. Better be safe than sorry!

Hi Mobi

It's a little distressing getting sick in a foreign country, I hope you are better soon.

Your symptoms are similar to what I experienced in Bkk about 2 years ago...turned out I had a bad stomach infection.

How is your stomach mate? could this be the problem? is your stool normal?

Sounds like something you see on yahoo! Answers when somebody is asking if you can diagnose their symptoms. Answer: Go see a doctor.

Dengue Fever has been getting a lot of attention in the press lately Mobi.

Don't wait until Monday... head off to Sriracha today and get yourself checked out.

Some vitamin B may give your energy levels a lift.

How are you this morning, Mobi? Did you have a check up already?

Wish you a fast recovery!

I think I had Dengue 2 weeks back or a very nasty virus, had a lot of the symptoms as described and knocked out for 8/9 days.

A friend ended up with it as well.

Rest and fluids

Had a pretty good night's sleep, but woke up with a thumping headache, and a temp of 102F (38.8c). Took a load of paracetamol and slept for a few more hours.

Feeling a bit better now, but still dizzy, weak and nauseous, but at least the headache has abated somewhat.

I've never had anything like this before in my life and it's really thrown me off kilter.

Heck how many people have to say it to you Mobi? GET YOUR BUM TO THE HOSPITAL FOR TESTS PRONTO!!

The symptoms that you have described are similar to what my g/f had in Sydney a few weeks ago.

She was at work and collapsed onto the floor, vomiting, dizzyness, blurry vision, acute pain in the stomach and difficulty in breathing. They called an ambulance for her and carted her off to the nearest hospital.

The doctors took blood samples, asked if she was pregnant (no, thank Goodness :o ) and kept her under observation for several hours.

Her blood pressure has always been low and the doctors thought that this may have contributed to her illness. They also told her that her potassium levels were very low. (solution: eat more bananas and tomatoes.)

She was released from hospital, told to attend her local doctor and to arrange a ultra-sound examination for gall stones. The doctor thought that she was suffering from a viral infection.

She got the all clear for gall stones and was back at work three days later. No problem since.

I'm not one to self-diagnose health problems and I agree with other posters who advise you to see a doctor. You can always use the visit to arrange for some blood tests for diabetes, cholesterol, prostate etc.

I hope all comes good soon for you.

Just want to thank all those who wished me well and gave me advice.

I guess I panicked a bit, because despite the fact that I have a load of chronic medical problems, I am hardly ever sick as a rule - like lying in bed unable to move - and never even go down with flu and things like that.

Well it might have been dengue fever, as I seemed to have had all the symptoms including a very high fever, aching joints and nausea, but after 48 hours the fever disappeared, and by the time I saw the doctors on Monday, I was fine.

But I guess shouldn't be too surprised at this - about 10 years ago I went down with shingles, and the Doctor told me I would be off work for 2 - 3 months - yet within 2 days I was better! I've had a few other similar 'false alarms'.

Anyway many thanks one and all. :D

Good to hear it Mobi.

I didn't want to join the chorus and say go see a Dr, it seemed the most prudent thing to do.

Anyway glad to hear all is well.

Mobi,

I've only just seen this as I was offline for a few days catching up on some overdue work.

You may well have had dengue or a similiar virus. Look at the palms of your hand and also your abdomen and see if you can make out a faint rash, if so then almost sure to have been dengue (no rash doesn't mean it wasn't, tho).

However for future reference...someone with your medical history, chronic conditions and medications should ALWAYS see a doctor when ill, and promptly. I'm not one for telling everyone to run off and see a doc at the first sign of illness, and a person with no known serious health problems can afford to wait and see a bit with symptoms like you had as long as they are lucid and able to take in enough fluids. But not someone with significant heart disease and diabetes!

If you still have not found an internist you like and trust, keep looking. You have a complex set of chronic conditions, which inter-relate, and are on some serious medications, which interact, and your health needs to be looked after by someone familiar with the overall picture.

Yes mate... once you've been there you'll vow never to return to the other "international" Pattaya hospitals.

Good to hear you're feeling better... but listen to and heed Sheryl's advice.
