Online retail titan Amazon is cutting more than 18,000 jobs worldwide in the largest layoffs programme in its history as part of plans to slash costs.

It is understood the job losses will include the UK and Europe, but the firm has not given details of how each country will be affected.

I don't know, but I suspect it's because they are replacing humans with machines. How else could they provide the same service with so many less people otherwise?

I also suspect it's a taste of things to come for many labour intensive companies.

No, it's because they thought the surge of online shopping during covid would become permanent and hired like crazy to cope. They also doubled the base salary of at least some staff so they could meet their quotas. A month later they are now firing them because people reverted to bricks and mortar shopping.

Some of what you say is true but the main issue is as I said above.
