ukrules
I've recently started occasionally drinking a cognac in the evening, I used to buy a bottle every now and again when passing through airports some 20 years ago as it was 'cheap' and I remember liking the taste, but as a sipping drink it's not really something for drinking 'down the pub' so much. I like it cold - straight out of the fridge, I don't care what the so called experts say - I don't want it tepid. There's nothing wrong with drinking some 50 to 70ml of something like this and I don't care what they say. If on the other hand if I was a raging alcoholic who drank the whole bottle then they might have a point. I'm beginning to have less and less faith in what these experts warn about over the years. LaosLover
I'm good for about 3-4 alcohol units a week (decent rum, usually). How is that any worse health-wise than having a big slice of chocolate cake? Just had some chili clams in Chinatown, Singapore. A double Laphroaig whiskey is only $8 US. Lovely together. High end whiskey at a bar is a rare Singapore deal. Skip the Singapore Sling: cherry liqueur and gin together is the worst idea ever. In high school, we had a drink called the Purple Jesus: cough syrup and low grade vodka. A Singapore is the lesser version of that. I def love the Japanese high ball idea - a shot and a big glug of club soda in a tall glass with lots of ice. So refreshing.

Since most drinks are iced, it always seems backwards not to.

You are telling me i don't know how to party? If you really want to know my opinion then: No, I don't think you know how to party. It might happen that I see who is playing around with whom or signaling whatever. And why would I care if I know already in advance who will break up and why? Maybe I would be interested in all that if I would be an investigator at work. But while I am not at work and when I go to a party then let's party. Where is the booze and where are the cutest girls? Let's concentrate on the important parts in life.

LaosLover
So where are non-drinkers socializing? Starbucks? Because downing four expresso's isn't that great for you either. Also, I am much more prone to eat something unhealthy in a Starbucks than a bar. I know from getting laughed at in the other thread that this is not a crowd that's going chit chat in a pot bar. Maybe Swenson's? 1

LaosLover
I like the idea of gym-socializing, but everyone there seems to just want to do their thing and not have conversations. Since I have to literally force myself to go there and exercise, I too just want to get it over with. Obviously, Metoo# means avoiding even casual eye contact with any women there. I have heard about "locker room talk" my whole life, where strangers might potentially want to talk about women and sex with me, while showering, but I think: 1) It's a ridiculous myth and it never happened in the real world even one time. 2) It possibly happens (like in the navy or something), but wiould never happen to me.

LaosLover
If you're of a certain age and from the states, you've thrown up tequila through your nose at least a half a dozen times. For some, that's a gateway to ordering up bottles of Patron, for others its a message to pick a more nasal-friendly thing to binge on.

It is more a meeting point after you start meeting the same people, especially if you have specific hours and days you work out. It doesnt happens over night, but be patient. Especially one gym in soi 88 in Hua Hin was a good meeting point with a protein/fruit shake bar and also a restaurant. Also had rumba, yoga, spinning classes. Many girls working out there to with weights.
LaosLover
No one likes a Johnny No-mates who's hanging around the smoothie bar after they finish their smoothie. On the internet, people are always being urged to join a hiking group to meet people. This has resulted in women forming women-only hiking groups so they can hike in peace. I really want to respect other people's fitness process; and hope that I someday, somehow acquire one myself.

Your problem is because of alcohol you can't conceive how normal people socialise, you can only envisage it in groups styled on joint alcohol consumption groups. drinkers labour under the misconception that everybody behaves like they do - because they simply can't see beyond alcohol. In fact on a world scale they are a minority. Edited January 6, 2023 by kwilco 2
LaosLover
At an average of less than half an alcohol unit a day, you sort of have the wrong guy to offer up your free psychotherapy to. For meeting people and shooting the breeze, drinker or not, a bar is hard to beat. It's only been popular for about 800 years, so your point of view may yet prevail.

This is a classic drinker's response. Firstly in denial about the effects of the alcohol they drink (v.WHO above) and then cannot conceive of life without an alcohol model of socialising. As said drinkers can't see outside the glass.

Well, however, when I loose it or if I loose it before I die, I will start drink to. I'd rather die not too old and only short time ill rather then live a long time with pain and suffering. Drinking alcohol in excess once in a while or in moderate amount regularly is not going to kill you. I am sure drinking a bit will reduce stress levels and they stress is a major cause of ill health. Actually, if you read all the stuff health experts say, nearly everything is bad for our health, from processed food, meat, sunlight UV radiation, toothpaste, sugar, salt, artificial sweeteners, electricity radiation from your TV or phone, fruit juices, BBQ food, cooked food, fat, vegetable spreads, cheese, milk, and overdone toast, and even sex. Personally I like to drink in company, but I have also no problem if I don't drink at all. It is no fun to be sober when everybody is drinking. The jokes are just not funny without enough alcohol. And spending extended time with tea totals is mostly no fun. A long time ago when I was young, I spend most my time with people who smoked. I never smoked myself but in average if was more fun to be around those smokers. If people don't want to drink that is obviously fine. I prefer the others who know how to party. Being sober in bars that are prostitute pick-up joints in Thailand , seeing how they carry on , how they tell the same jokes to each other every night and the constant innuendoes and "outrageously" bending over making sex noise and discussions about who has had sex with who and the denials and then the hilarious punchline "I'm still a virgin" , gets rather reparative after a while and the "I no member, me dunk" . But you all go ahead and party and enjoy yourselves
