Kevin McCarthy is finally the elected Speaker for the House

According to MSNBC contributor Kurt Bardella, newly elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is going to have some explaining to do when he has to reveal to his caucus what he promised the far-right extremists in the House in his unrelenting campaign to be handed the gavel.

As the former GOP spokesperson explained to host Alex Witt, the new speaker probably got "rolled" and the concessions he made will come in handy for Democrats trying to slow McCarthy's agenda down.

One change in particular — which empowers a single lawmaker to launch the process of ousting the Speaker — is giving heartburn to lawmakers in both parties, who fear a hard-line group of conservatives will use it repeatedly to browbeat McCarthy into keeping crucial must-pass bills off the floor.

The result, they say, will be a heightened risk of shuttering the government, defaulting on federal debts and grinding the business of the House to a screeching halt.

“I think it’s a terrible decision,” said Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.).

I've been thinking about this. I believe such subpoenas should be regarded as political grandstanding and should be resisted unless the committees can produce some evidence of a possible crime being committed (such as investigating a riot and evidence of a potential insurrection or an allegation of missing documents), not just a conspiracy theory that the FBI are part of some imaginary deep state. I believe that will be the process anyway.

If there is one thing I learned last year it is that these House investigations yield NOTHING!  Look at the 1/6 thing: they dug up all this stuff and what is the most stringent thing they can do?  Refer it to DOJ.  That's it.  DOJ may be too busy to get to it.  If a GOP president were due to be inaugurated this year that report would be binned.  Members of Congress that get subpoenaed can tell the committee to shove it without consequence, like Jordan did.

If they get to a grand inquisition over Hunter's laptop it will embarrass the Biden family -- he's on his own vid smoking crack, for chrissake.  The worst it will get is they  can rain on Biden's re-election.  If Joe runs again.

Maybe they'll hype it that Hunter's laptop has an AI that will cause it to morph into Skynet, as in the Terminator movies.  ????

So did kevie and the kooks just hand the dems a gift that they can use every time the repubs try and start an investigation into hunter bidens laptop or hillary's emails?

Yes.  Like they did with their voter suppression moves -- it hadn't occurred to them that it could discourage their own from voting, like it did last November.

Ready, fire, aim.

The special counsel can't be stopped by anybody. That's why he was appointed and why they exist.

That's already happened long ago. It didn't appear to affect Biden's election. Or the mid terms. The contents of that laptop have been public for some time.

I think it would be mistake for Biden to run again but nothing to do with the contents of that laptop. That won't hurt him.

Do not underestimate the length of time the GOP is willing to beat a dead horse.  Benghazi! was three years.  There is NO reason to believe they will not continue with it.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if when they ground the government to a halt and so on, that they lost there pay as well, including travel expenses, paid for cars etc...

Voters, Republican, Democrat and Independent need to take careful note of the Republican intention to place Social Security spending under annual Congressional approval.

Stopping the Government by political gamesmanship to withhold funding might be a bit of a jolly wheeze, stopping Social Security checks not so much so.

Especially if you happen to be one of those waiting for your Social Security check to arrive.

Clearly part of the deal struck with the extremists was McCarthy reading from script to thank Trump.

What an embarrassing mess the Republicans have chosen to become.

There is a knowledge gap, to put it nicely.

Lots of retirees strike a bold, patriotic stance against socialism, a remnant sympathy from the Cold War years.  So the GOP says "ok, we'll get rid of Social Security and Medicare."  Then the geezers go ballistic saying "YOU CAN'T DO THAT!  THOSE ARE OUR RIGHTS!!"  This, in a nutshell, was what the Tea Party was about, grass-roots outrage against something they didn't understand.

Kansas learned the hard way.  They put Tea Party pols spouting "less spending!  Smaller gov't" in office, and when public service things started disappearing the people said "hey, what's going on?"  Well, this is what you voted for!  I think the lesson learned for the Kansans was reflected in that vote last year where they voted to uphold abortion rights.

Ron Johnson of Wisconsin is the one pushing to get the annual review of the SS system passed.  Uh-huh.  A large part of the GOP base (pre MAGA) is people over 60 -- they sure are gonna love ya, Ronnie.  But the GOP is good at gift-wrapping the turds, so they get these things past their voters (that's what all those pollsters are for).  It's like the airlines did with taking all the comforts away saying "this way you only pay for what you want" and in doing that the cost of flying went up.

Let's not forget that all those politicians were democratically elected by many, I guess mostly millions, of Americans.

It shows us again how many crazy Americans are out there to vote for such people.

Ah, the democratic weak spot eh?

Have to put up with all those "crazy" voters that have a different opinion to oneself.

The crazy is voting against their own interests. That's why the phrase "kool-aid" was coined.

It has been a boon for the Dems last 3 elections thanks to those crazies whether voters or GOP politicians. Too bad both groups are withering away.

One wonders what he actually did give away in concessions.

We will soon learn when the House seat for the passing of the rules package. Expecting another clown show when the concession specifics are presented to the fractious parties of moderates and small group of far right Freedom Caucus which Kevin paid a handsome ransom to buy his speaker role. Standing by with popcorn.

No

I understand liberals and conservatives and many shades of above.

What I don't understand is how people vote for serial liars with no knowledge and no plan.

How can things get better when people vote for people who are clearly not able to do the job?

How can things get better when people vote for people who are clearly not able to do the job?

Which would apply to the Democrat side as well, would it not? How's Kamala doing with her responsibility on southern border?

What I don't understand is how people vote for serial liars with no knowledge and no plan.

Most politicians then?

I think you missed all my posts that people often vote for what they perceive as the lesser of 2 bad options, and bad options seem commonplace in politics now, IMO.

It doesn't mean they are crazy, unless multi millions are all crazy.
