I get every year a "thank you" email from the government about how my taxes are spent, the biggest item by far is paying old age pensions. Pensions are not benefits. They are entitlements based on money paid in NI contributions during one's working life. 2

There are those that are and earn more that my wife and I, who are not struggling. The only difference I can see that would cause those who struggle to do so would be lifestyle choices. You said that was rubbish. So, why do you think some struggle when their salaries are equal to or more than those who are doing OK? 1

That you can’t get past your ‘I’m all right Jack’ mindset doesn’t provide any insights into the causes of poverty in the UK. It might, for example, occur to you that very many people have incomes lower than yours. Millions of people in the UK can’t afford to eat regular meals, it has nothing at all to do with your income or your need to preen yourself.

proton
Exaggeration from the Guardian, they never seem to cover the millions spent everyday putting up illegal immigrants in hotels. That would pay for a few million meals for these hungry Brits. The Guardian seems to print in poverty porn. 1

A bunch of pompous old out of touch retirees making totally incorrect assumptions about the kind of people that are using these services because they can't be bothered to do the slightest bit of research. No, this is not limited to "people with tattoos", and it's not a case of a few chubbas not being able to afford an ice cream after their McDonalds. We're not talking about uneducated, unskilled workers struggling a bit. We're talking about families of paid professionals; teachers, nurses, police and firefighters. People who have studied hard, invested time and money in their education and career so that they could avoid situations like this. Yet for the last 10 years they've had governments impose real-term pay cuts and now with interest rates rising and inflation raging at double-digit levels they are left without enough money to feed and/or heat themselves and thier families. Show a bit of deleted compassion. And yes those same people are probable up to their eye's in debt with credit cards, people nowadays what everything ,and just put it down on plastic ,and now that is coming back to bite them in the rear. Look at the UK debt to GDP, at the end of Q2 April -June 2022 101.9% of GDP.

Pensioners also receive welfare supplements to their income, by example; help with housing costs, additional winter fuel allowances, free bus passes, free TV licenses, free prescriptions, attendance allowances, mobility allowances. Pensioners are well cared for in the UK.
