Covid latest: Numbers of sick/deaths continue to fall - just eight tourists infected in 2 weeks

In the last week the number of cases continued to fall.

 

44 had died in a week, or about 6 per day. 

 

This represented a 32.3% drop from the previous week. 

 

Eight tourists had been infected in the period of 8th to 21st January but only one required a stay in hospital.

 

627 people had been in hospital from 15th to 21st January.

 

277 had lung infections. 178 needed respirators.

 

Since January first there had been 2,593 cases and 167 deaths.

Thailand reports sharp drop in Covid-19 hospitalisations, deaths

The Department of Disease Control has reported a sharp drop in the number of Covid-19 patients being hospitalised or dying in the third week of January. Nation Thailand reports that between January 15 and 21, there were 627 people – an average of 90 a day – admitted to hospital with severe Covid-19 symptoms.

 

Between January 8 and 14, the figure was 969, or an average of 138 a day. In 2023 so far, a total of 2,593 people have been hospitalised due to severe Covid symptoms. In the third week of January, there were 44 Covid-related deaths, an average of 6 a day. This is a drop on the 65 deaths – or about 9 a day – reported in the second week.

 

A total of 167 Covid-related fatalities have been reported since the start of the year. Health officials say 277 Covid patients are currently receiving treatment for lung infections, with 178 on ventilators.

 

Between January 8 and 21, 8 overseas arrivals tested positive for the virus. Of those, one was admitted to hospital, while the other 7 only had mild symptoms or were asymptomatic. 3 of those infected had arrived from China and the remainder were from Myanmar, Cambodia, Japan, the UK and South Korea.

The DDC says the dominant strain circulating in Thailand is the Omicron BA.2.75 sub-variant, which accounts for 86% of cases. DDC director-general Thares Krainairawiwong says the remainder are variants from overseas.

 

“People are advised to continue protecting their health against Covid-19 by wearing face masks in public, washing their hands regularly, and taking an ATK test immediately if they have symptoms of fever, coughing, runny nose, or lose their sense of smell or taste.”

 

Officials recently urged workers in the tourism sector to ensure they received a booster dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in order to remain protected from severe illness in the event of infection.

And what about the other non-hospitalized positives? Just sent on their merry, mask-free way?

Well if you believe Chinese officials, which understandably most people won't, 80% of their population have already been infected the past month or so.

This must be the follow up article to one that was posted in BKK Newspaper a few Days ago.

This is an article of smoke and mirrors me thinks

The Newspaper out of BKK, stated that just a few Tourists had tested Positive for Covid upon their arrival in Thailand during the same period as this article states.

However ! what this article does not state is the number of Tourists that had to report their Covid status to their Governments before returning to their Home Countries during the same period.

That number was reported to be between 300 - 400 people testing positive, after their stay in Thailand.

Hmmmm

Even looking at these small numbers, Covid is putting more people on respirators than any other condition.

That doesn't mean that they cannot be reinfected by new variants. And emergence of new variants among so many cases is quite likely.

Flights from china to milan were some 50 % positive, that just 4 weeks ago. 
true numbers for positive chinese arrivals are in thousands. Many of them are coming on indirect flights, as there are yet very few direct ones. 
Nobody is checking vax certificates and nobody is wearing masks inbound to thailand. That suppose to be conditions set at the beginning of January

Let us see how this plays out, before labeling this a doom scenario. Yes, alot of infected people will show up from China. But, the subsequent variants seem to be getting weaker and more feeble. So, maybe this virus is nearly played out. Maybe.

How can they know the true numbers?  Who are they testing? Who reports of they feel sick?  Who reports positive results of self tests?  How many test kits are people buying?  We got COVID right as we arrived in Thailand in early December.  We took self tests.  We were fully backed and boosted.   It wasn't real bad.  We lost taste for 5 days coughing for 3 weeks.  Felt like Laying low for 2 days.    I believe anyone who has a cough has or had COVID recently and you hear lots of tourists coughing.  We are back in USA now.

People with lung infections going to hospital. Well this time of year I'm sure that's not unusual just so happens they have omicron. It's time for Thailand to take the masks off.

I would like to see some evidence supporting your statement. Omicron affects mucosal surfaces not lungs. As for "It aint over...." I doubt it ever will be but it (Omicron) is way, way less dangerous than previously. Indeed it really isn't dangerous at all now for the majority of people. I had it just shy of 5 months ago. Very bad headache, aching muscles and joints for 1 day (day zero). Eased off the next day and basically I was symptom free by day 3. Tiredness did hang around for quite some time though. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

oubt it ever will be but what is happening is it's getting less severe. Omicron and Delta asre 2 different beasts. Omicron is our saviour not our doom.

Due to limited testing it's hard to get an absolute handle on real numbers but the world trend seems to be downwards including China. Who knows if there will be another wave but at present there's a relative lull so let's enjoy it.
