Onward Ticket

I would like to fly to KL, stay for a while in Malaysia, and return to Thailand by train. 

Will I be able to enter Malaysia without a confirmed air or train ticket?

I don't know what the actual rules are but numerous times in the past I have entered via air and left by car (to Singapore) and vice versa.  I do not recall ever being asked about my onward travel plans, nor when I have flown in and back out again, and have never had to show a ticket or reservation of any kind.
