I'm looking for a wedding present for my brother. I originally thought I would get a mirror with teak carvings around it, but I'm also considering a carving to hang on the wall. Maybe one of the large flower designs or elephants. I've been to the place in Chalong on the road to Kata, and also found something that was OK at the hawker stalls at the north end of Karon beach. Any better suggestions? Thanks again.

As you come to Patong from Karon.. Just after where Nanai Rd goes left and you loop towards the beach on the right hand side where its mostly painting guys theres a shop with Thai wooden sculptures, wall items, standing Buddha bits.. Etc. It usually has a few nice pieces and is above the usual tourist tat type quality but you may have to push hard to avoid tourist pricing.

I will check that place out, thanks for the tip. No one else has any good ideas? Maybe no one is into the Thai art scene? Cheers.

On the Bypass road, there's a large shop that has hundreds of wood carvings for hanging on a wall. I had their business card, but can't seem to find it now. Maybe someone else knows the name and address. It's a few km north of the Tesco/Lotus intersection, on the right hand side when traveling north (toward the airport). Last time I was there, they had stacks of teak king size beds at the front, but the entire middle and sides of the shop was stuffed with these carved panels.
