Car insurance in UK, is it possible for my mother to add me onto her insurance, when I'm not a UK resident ?

Featured Replies

Going to the UK and my mother has to renew her car insurance in a few days. She's just off the phone and was told that she can't put me onto her insurance for a month as I'm not a UK resident. Her insurance said no insurance company will do that, which I find hard to believe.

Anyone got any experience with being added onto a parents car insurance?

Another thing, is Thai driver's licence OK to drive in the UK?

I only have an old paper UK one.

Yes, up to 12 months.

As for the insurance question it is quite likely that her insurance will not allow a foreign resident on the policy.  But not the case that insurance is not possible, you may need a separate short term policy.  Lots of info if you search.

Advise getting the UK photocard drivers licence. It should be possible to exchange the old paper one and apply for photocard online. UK insurers are anal and whilst it would be OK to drive on Thai licence in UK (car hire), a car policy of your mother would usually insist on all drivers "holding a full UK driving licence for at least 2 years" which you have. The residency should not be an issue.

Apply for a new UK license using your mother’s address.

You are then a licensed UK driver.

Then get your mum to add you to her insurance.

Jobs a good ‘n’.
