Daily News reported that Tony Woodsome - AKA fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra - was regaling his followers on "Care" on Facebook yesterday.

 

The former Thai political party leader said that he had the answers to Thailand's economic problems.

 

He turned his attention to the debate over the so called "Poor People's Card" saying it would be ignored as people would earn too much to qualify.

 

Daily News Thai Caption: Venezuela!

 

In another segment he said that Thailand was heading the way of Venezuela because the government had been hopeless at balancing the books.

 

"They only know how to pay, not how to generate income," he said.

 

The South American country was left destitute after years of corruption and mismanagement.

 

He would know what to do was "Tony's" message.

I have spent a lot of time in venezuela  and thailand is not in the same league, venezuela is a totally destroyed country , violent ,and bankrupt ,, Thailand is nowhere near as bad ,, it could get that way  but TBH Burma is more likeVenezuela at the moment ...Thailand is more likely to be subsumed buy the Chinese ,

No question unemployment is way, way up, the economy is in the toilet, and the policies have failed miserably. Whether or not the tourism sabotage was deliberate is questionable, but a question worth asking. A bit of a neocon type agenda? Destroy the industry, reduce it to rubble, get rid of the nightlife and the industry, and rebuilt it from scratch, in the image of great purity of the "noble ones". Quite a diabolical possibility.

 

It is amazing how these guys go on and on and on about what they are intending to do, and never, ever talk about the sacrifices they are willing to make, to attract these new businesses and investors. A true COTU (Thailand is the center of the known universe) mentality, and it is so far from reality, it boggles the mind. Millions of jobs have been lost. What is being proposed to help those families get back on their feet?

 

I truly believe, that 20 or 30 years from now, in tourism industry, business and sociology classes, at the uni level, there will be tours of these hollowed out shells, of huge hotels that were built, and could neither find guests to stay, nor even a market for condo conversions, and ended up abandoned, after buyers could not be found, or owners refused to accept 20% of the land and construction costs, as a sales price. 
 
That is where I see the future of Thai tourism. And why is the economy hurting here?

The 4 notable truths of Prayuth.
1. He has always been an incapable leader. He does not inspire men. He oppresses his people.
2. He does not have a clue how to run the economy. He has made a total mess of things. While many economies around the world are booming, Thailand is barely selling any new cars, barely selling any real estate, barely getting by. Millions are still out of work, due to the Prayuth Decimation. He is moving the nation backwards. 
3. He has destroyed tourism. It will likely never recover to a meaningful extent. So many mistakes have been made, so much timidity was shown, and so much sabotage has laid the industry to waste.
4. He is not liked by many. His popularity rating is likely under 5%. He would never be re-elected in a free and fair election. He is a dinosaur, lacking any creative juice, and selects only bottom of the barrel men for positions of leadership.

Well in my view I see it happening a little bit each and everyday, with the household debt climbing out of control, NPL's not being added to bank balance sheets, the government failing to ensure they are on top of the inflation.  The billions borrowed and the lower end of society out begging more and more. Tourism will be slowing down around the end of April.  Prices are skyrocketing for food and power in the west, and as we found out yesterday many corporate locations are laying off folks, which does have a knock on effect here.  I am sure some economic guru will be telling us the past few months are nothing to be concerned about.  A few of the families we have been assisting are preparing to move back to the provinces they came from as it is getting harder and harder to live in Bangkok and the jobs are not as available as they were before.

Purachai had all the bars close at 12 pm, even in Bangkok. Tumbleweed rolling down Silom and Sukhumvit. And THEN he brought in the 2 to 5 no alcohol sales. So 'Tony' may have been better at industry but none of them know anything about what tourists want and it's not all beer bars and karaoke. They are, after all, just a generation away from the swamp.

For all his faults, "Tony" was so much more competent in managing the economy than the current inept lot in charge that it hurts.

 

Who knows what Thailand could have achieved if the army hadn't meddled in politics! Now there's only debt and stagnation, what a depressing state of affairs.

That devaluation kickstarted the budget Thailand and its been a good run since then but yes.. Hes right.. 25 years ago Thailand did suffer hard..

Yet they never will, and this current group in power gave themselves a free pass from being prosecuted for any wrongdoings....I mean has article 44 really been canceled

But that then is a drain of forward consumption.. Thailand will no doubt still be here and carry on muddling through... But it now has low growth, medium inflation, massive debt loads, and is incredibly reliant on a kind of strip mining tourism that is destroying the appeals and beauty it had. 

That isnt a cheerful picture.

87% household debt is a hard thing to overcome....

Well they have proven inadequate, incompetent at everything they have touched. One just has to look at the growth figures plus the Thai rankings which were all much better. I never liked him personally but he was the best for Thailand and still is. A foot not to all the fan boys out there please tell me of one single country in the world that prospered after a coup, just one?

I generally agree, although whoever gets to run the country will pillage it! Running Thailand is the best scam there is!
