Thailand occupies twice the land mass that the UK does, 198K square miles versus 98,000, yet it has a similar sized population.

so they need to build a lot more 5-star hotels and airports in Nakhon Nowhere....

Wants 80 million tourists but also wants them to magically evenly distribute themselves around the country so places like Pattaya, that were overrun in 2019 when 'only' 40 million tourists were welcomed, will have just the right amount of those 80 million visitors.   North Pattaya Road heading to the beach was gridlock around noon today--magical even distribution currently not working.

Thai tourism officials have set a target of 80 million foreign visitors by 2027, but the tourism minister says congestion must be alleviated at the country’s tourist hotspots.

Keep trying...

Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn insists there should be no return to the overcrowding seen at popular destinations prior to Covid-19.

But let's double the tourists. Truly this man is a space time wizard. But if you could maybe just give it go with about 50% of the Russians, that would be a good start.

So they intend to double the population now in Thailand with 80 million tourists. Silly question but where are these 80 million tourists going to stay? As far as I remember Thailand is a small country with limited land resources. Additionally how will these people get around? Traffic is bad now in Bangkok and probably elsewhere, doubling the number of people on the move is not going to help the situation,

You are referring to a concept called mitigation. It does not exist here, due to the total lack of planning.

And besides, this number is solely a dream, based on hubris. No improvements being made, and none planned. No sacrifices being made either. Just arrogance, and the belief that Thailand is the center of the known universe.

Bangkok is not Paris, nor Venice, nor Rome. Bangkok is a great city, but it has alot of problems, and solving them seems to be over the heads of the highly incapable leadership, that the nation had been cursed with.

what happened to sustainable tourism then? these targets are insane.

Russians, Indians and Chinese are admired all over the world for their total commitment to sustainable behavior and etiquette.

We get old and the young come up and lead.  The days that we knew are far gone.

Could they get 80 million?  They will get over 40 million eventually and it's not outrageous to think so.  The real question is how sustainable is this tourism number given the environmental challenges that are present and will surely get worse?  Particularly in the hot season?

It would be interesting to see another 50 years how things settle out.

Thailand has over 800,000 hotel rooms which when multiplied by 365 nights equals 292 million guest nights or 350% of the required need

If there's anything else I can help you understand, please feel free to ask.

Fortunately I will not have to worry about this.  And the "young leaders" pretend to care about sustainability as long as it gets "followers" on their smartphones  (guess we are lucky that the phones are smart....)

292m guest nights. Average stay 10 nights. Based on your math that would be 35% of the required need. But it isn't, because many rooms are taken by couples (or more). Thailand's occupancy has been at approximately 70%, which is a sweet spot for hotels and of course, covers low season as well. The short answer is to accomodate 80m tourists, which is double the amount of the 2019 figure, you need to double the amount of rooms, or encourage people to stay shorter (no)! or encourage people to travel during low season and shoulder times (difficult).

Let them double up, the Indians do! They definitely can't come here during low season, that's a non-starter because that's when we go on holiday and we want the place  to our selves. Whatever next!

And what's wrong with the beach, when I was a lad it was the done thing to sleep on the beach at night in Cote d'Azure.

Build new hotels indeed! The idea is to make money, not spend it, TAT wont like your idea one little bit.
